Hi All,

My boat cover is in good shape but absoarbs the water pretty bad now. I've been looking at water repellents and came across two that seem pretty good. One is by Iosso and the the other is Aqua-Tite (not sure of manufacturer). Does anyone have any advice on doing this and what product to use?

Thanks;
Charlie

Re: Leaking canvas boat cover

I just recently applied 303 to my M1950 canvas tent. It works well but the 16oz bottle wasn't nearly enough and at 15 bucks a pint I'm not sure I can afford to treat the entire tent. (It's a big tent)

My point is it's gonna take a good amount of 303 to get the job done and it's pricey but it's highly recommended by both manufacturers and end users.

Camp Dry works pretty good. Any water repellant will work good on your cover.

Re: Leaking canvas boat cover

although this won't work for all boats, on my older, fiberglass boats, I resolved that covers won't be completely waterproof, but serve to protect the boat from sun, leaves (enemy #1 in my book), salt air a little, dirt, relatively honest thieves of small things, birds, varmints and coal dust. So I tolerate some dripping, which simply drains down and out the plug hole, and see the cover has having a limited function during the off season (the boats stay uncovered on season).

So far so good.

I agree with Home Cookin. My canvass is old and leaks plenty but I don't mind at all. If it did not leak it would probably pool water which tends to eventually tear your canvass. I too have heard Thompsons water seal(for decks) works great and is relatively inexpensive to do the job. I have not used it as I prefer to let it leak as the water runs out the scuppers anyway. When uncovered it is clean and the wax still intact as it has escaped the damaging rays of the sun. To each his own.

The 303 and others I've tried last only a couple of years. Less if the boat is stored in the elements. Use CANVAC. It'll last 5 years minimum.

Re: Leaking canvas boat cover

I have been fabricating boat tops and covers for 20 years an I use 303 and Aquatite brands. Aquatite is made by Marchem which manufactures top gun, top notch and many other popular fabrics. as Glen Raven recomends 303 brand. for the sunberlla. The big Question is this because of marketing?
I recomend anual application for best results, especially if you store outdoors. Do you know if you have a pollyester or acrilic fabric? Lightly coating regularly is beter than soaking the cloth. Aviod strong industrial strength cleaners and never pressure wash covers it destroys the fibers. Most other brands are silicone based like Aquatite, I do not know what 303 is made of, only that it works well also.

Thompsons water seal may seal the cover but unless it is sprayed on lightly, remember that it weighs more than 9#/gallon. No sense water proofing with a product that adds so much weight the cover sags or fails under its own weight.

Thompsons water sealer in a pump garden sprayer has worked for me.
