No, the lead was used to help protect exhaust valve seats before they went to hardened seats

No, unleaded is fine. Two stroke outboards never needed lead in the gas for lubrication.

Valve lubrication was just a side benefit anyway. It was added to increase the octane. They use other methods of boosting octane now.

Back in the "old" days, we used to go out of our way to get outboard gas WITHOUT lead in it. It was called "Marine White". Nowadays, it is called "Regular Unleaded".

Yeah, white gas! We thought that was like racing fuel for an outboard. And it was expensive compared to regular leaded gas. So I only occasionally treated my motor to a tankful 50-60 cents a gallon was lot when you consider regular was about 30 cents.
