Re: Last try for help with 50 hp shift lever.

It sounds like the problem is in the control box. My nephew accidentally tried to shift the motor with the warm up bar not fully down and cracked a plastic guide/part in the control box and was giving similar symptoms. It finally broke fully and made it worse to were I couldn't even move the level at all. Not saying you broke it this way too but the parts in the box can get brittle and weak and break "Just cause".

Had to rebuild the control box couple of plastic parts, a guide and some other stuff.

Is your control box like this ?

If so its the same as mine and I think you should focus on the control box. I know it kinda of happened around the same time as you dropping the lower unit but you disconnecting the cables and it still happening rules out alot.

2 manuals Ive found but cant find the 50ESL75 (B) one
Mabey someone can chime in make sure these are for your motor too.

And Im charging my battery for my camera as I type ill get pictures of the control box sections from my manual you can start to check stuff, hang in there.

PS: Don't stop posting on this forum. No one is getting annoyed . :) We want you back on the water !

Well, I took the control off and removed the lever and tha side panel. When I turned the control upside down so I could see the shift lever assy moving I noticed that when I was going fro full throttle forward up to neutral the shift lever assy would hit the shift lever plate and stop just before the neutral switch is activated. if that makes any sense. I might have part names incorrect, but basically looks like a cam and cam follower that binds up for some reason.

Okay, well for some strange reason my book has that model too. It covers more of that model than my own.

Give me a couple of mins for battery to charge and then to hope on photobucket.

EDIT: Can it be something small like the lockout knob screwing up somehow? The button you have to hold/press up unlock the level to shift it in gear.

Not sure about the shift detent ball and spring, don't really know where it is or what it looks like, was definately lacking lube though

I dunno if it could be that button...I know that I have to depress the button to move lever forward and it seems to work

Sorry if the text is real small, and images. Mabey it can help abit until your manual gets there.

Try going to my photobucket album click the image and then again to zoom in, it looks clearer there for some reason.

Then try these or visa-versa

Here is the parts blow up.

http://www.boats.net/parts/search/BRP/JOHNSON/1975/50ESL75B 1975/REMOTE CONTROL/parts.html

Lack of lube will definetely bind things up. The dentent is at the bottom of the shift lever cam.

No, I don't have the box. I tore mine apart to take some pieces out of it to convert to a binnacle control. I did have it apart many times though to replace: ignition switch, lube it up, install a tilt switch, etc.

Figure 8-16 on the first image shows where my problem seems to lay, when the "teeth" come together going from forward toward neutral seem to stop the lever in its tracks just before 12 o'clock

So, part 30 & 84? they seem very small, what would happen if they failed?

They don't usually fail but they can stick. Then, you have no detent. If they pop out, it will bind the handle.

Look to see how the warm up lever works. If it is engaged (up) you can't shift it. The warm up lever and the large throttle handle are connected.

Re: Last try for help with 50 hp shift lever.

I was about to say that too. Even if it is another problems and we find/fix it, why is it working when he holds the warm up bar down. Definitely have to figure that out too, or that might be the main problem.

Do you have the box opened up to were the whole side panel is off, would like to take the warm up bar out of the equation like you did with the cables and put the cam threw its motion manually by hand to see if it still binds.

Now Ive never worked on this before and I dont know the exact way to open that whole upper side panel with the are/warm up bar off, im not %100 sure something might jump out at you. If you feel comfortable with this,be careful and go slow.
