Wow tough one. There are so many variables. If the lake is heavily pressured it can make it even tougher. In the dead of summer I find most of my bigger bass fairly deep, when I say deep I am talking ten to twenty five feet or so. It would be good to know what kind of lures you have been using. Also would be good to know the main forage base of the lake.

Early morning you can get bit in the shallows on a top water bait like a buzz bait or a spook type lure. Poppers work here too. Once the sun comes up forget top water for the most part. Work any weeds or pads you see. Outside weed edges are killer for LM bass. Drop a senko or a jig in there, or run a spinner bait along the weed edge. Look for weeds that form a point fish right over that. Thick pads can also produce. Again drop a bait like a T rig senko or a jig in the holes in the pads. Make sure your gear is up to it 15 pound test braid at the least. Emergent weeds that are just below the surface are great. I like to run a jointed rappalla over top of them. Boat docks are good spots in the heat also, skip your bait up underneath and work it back out. Over hanging branches are also good to fish the method. If you can find a rock ledge that drops off into deeper water you can kill em with tubes there. I like to rig em with a 1/4 ounce jig head hook exposed and let them drop down the ledge. Bumping and dragging there way down. I catch some nice fish that way. Also cranbaits like a bomber run along the ledge can produce some strikes, as well as suspending jerkbaits. On heavily pressured fish I'll fish off shore humps and bumps in the lake with a drop shot or a shaky head worm. I love main lake points that have a steep grade down to the bottom. I start with jigs on these spots. Keep trying some different approaches with areas and baits till you find what the fish want (a pattern) then stick with it. Certainly not all the answers here and even the best angler gets the skunk now and again.

For simplicity I would get some water mellon senkos for the shallows and weeds. and get some tubes for the deeper fish. Start there and be patient. Often when a bass takes a soft bait you wont hardly feel it, but you will see your line swimming away. SET THE HOOK. For plastics I use a medium heavy fast action rod 6' or 6' 6" lined with power pro braid with a fluro leader. The leader is a must , for the fish cant see it.

Hope this helps. Many good fisherman here that will no doubt add some good stuff for you to ponder.

what I do when I can't get the bass to bite? When I got tired of not catching fish, I started going after white bass & striped bass......lots of action, easy limits, and mmmmmmm good eating, too.

See if you can pal up with one of the tourney fisherman. They are usually willing to help a novice get started. Largemouth bass prefer weeds so they will be in and around them all of the time.

True on both points, bass love the oxygen rich weed beds. It also provides the cover for them to "ambush" passing food.

Very good advice!!!also time on the water.if ya cant find someone.go to the tournys and get in them.then watch what everybody is doing when your riding to spots be aware of every boat and what there doing.but dont get close to them just obsever when going by.if you see them fishing weeds find you some that looks like what they were doing and duplicate it.its a good learning tool.if you see alot of people fishing offshore structure remb er were they were and go back another day with a caroline rig and try to figure out what they were fishing, maybe a brush piles or a ledge or humps.that will give you an idea of how structure runs and humps and over time you will get confident in useins your electronics and will be able to find spots on your own.good luck and rember rome wasnt built in a day.

First...do not let any tournament fisherman tell you that they ALWAYS catch fish...they are lying! We ALL get skunked from time to time. I have been tourney fishing for awhile now and am the director of a division in our circut and let me tell you...some of the best guys in our circut get skunked! so dont feel bad if you go out and dont catch anything...it happens.

I just took my brother out for the first time last week. He explained bass fishing about the best I have ever heard it explained...

"Bass fishing seems alot like marriage...an awful lot of work for just a few minutes of excitement that come too far and few between"

Bass fishing takes time and practice. It takes alot of learning of what to do and what other options you have when you are not catching fish. The only way to learn that is to get out there and try. The pro's and the really good guys...they catch more fish more consistantly because they have the time and experience to know what to do when all the normal stuff does not work. Alot of guys in our club either do really well early in the year or really well late in the year but it is the guys who catch consistantly all through out the year that end up with the money/points/ and titles. ( which coincedentally is NOT me LOL!)
My point is...do not get frustrated. It takes time and practice. As someone said there are ALOT OF VARIABLES...and bass fishing is about knowing what to do with those variables. The old man in our circut once said..." bass fishing is not about catching fish, it is about catching fish who do not want to be caught."
It is a subtle but important distinction.

If your local club is a team circut...find out if you can sign up as a non boater or a substitute. There are as well alot of really good site on the web...bassdozer...bassresource...and a host of others that have some really good reading on them.
