Round 3 on the plier mods. Round 2 got them in and engaged. But my pin spacing is not close enough to get them compressed to the point of clearing the ridge. Grrr! If I only had a metal lathe....

you realize had you bought the right tool weeks ago, you would be back on the water with this. if you have a cummins dealer near you, pay the tech $50 to R&R the snap rings.

Yes, I realize. And thank you, you are the only one who has given me the straight answer on a pair that will 100% certainly work. But, my budget will not allow for those. That certainly doesn’t mean I dont appreciate everyone else’s help, but suggestions on where to look doesn’t help me pinpoint the pair I need (unless there’s ONE pair to choose) like the specialty company that had one pair but was sold out)

I have dozens of hobbies that come out of my “play money”. Out of that also has to fund my boat restoration, another full engine rebuild, this years fishing and camping expenses...the list goes on. Plus my retirement contributions...I digress

thanks for the suggestion on the Cummins shop.
The further complications are that we are in lockdown, stay at home orders. fines can be given. So my only practical choice (in my mind) is to look for a budget pair (Guaranteed to work and wait 2weeks for shipping, customs clearance and shipping from there to my door), modify my own to suit, or leave it and see if the gears work. I’m now going with the latter.

if someone can clarify they the exact McMaster Carr pair I posted will and DOES work, I will order them for the next project or if a breakdown occurs sooner. I have 2 more Lu’s that I will certainly be into so I will be buying, at some point this year. Just not a $250 pair.

Man oh man, I’m glad I picked these up. Thanks again @jakedaawg. These things were flexing under full compression. I can’t imagine that crappy pair I was trying to Jerry rig was ever going to work.. The jack thread and side knob on this works wonders.

Ok, so I'm cheap. I dont use the pliers very often so it seemed to be a waste to spend money. Took a old pair of long nose pliers from HF, about 11 inches long and filed the tips to suit the circlip, extended the handles with some aluminum tubing which I had on hand and did the job. No where near as good as the real thing I'm sure, but it works.

I tried the same thing but it didn’t work out in my case. I wasn’t going to give it a 3rd try.
But now that I see how this particular set of pliers works, and the range it needs to operate, I could easily replicate or modify another set of pliers to work. Maybe one day when I have some free time (laughs) I will do just that and create a DIY sticky since these pliers are obsolete.
