Have not been there yet. We have an 18' powerboat and are new to boating. Would February be a good month to go? Driving from central AZ. Any other advice?

Re: Lake Mohave

What time of year? Now?

I have boated on all of the Colorado River lakes and Mohave is my least favorite. The best thing there is the trip from dam to dam. 70 miles each way, but the view of Hoover is incredible.

Havasu is more fun and Mead is much more scenic. All three can be an issue for an 18 footer if the wind comes up. Havasu, is probably the safest weatherwise, but the southern end of Mohave doesn't get too bad. The big basin in the middle could turn you into a non-boater if the wind gets going . . .

Katherine's launch ramp can be very busy too, not an issue now, but the line there is the worst one I have ever seen in the middle of summer. Cottonwood Cove is nice, but real far for you.

I still haven't been either QC, we discussed Havasu on a thread once and I've been itching to go since.

Re: Lake Mohave

Planning on the first week in February. Being new boaters, what should we do if the wind picks up and the water gets real choppy? The reason we're thinking of Mohave is we're having out of town guests that week. Thought we would spend the night near Bullhead City, go boating the next day, and maybe take them to Vegas the next day (leave our boat parked at the hotel). Why is Mohave your least favorite?

Re: Lake Mohave

Here is how and why I rank them as I do:

1) Lake Mead. I love long distances and navigation challenges. This lake can deliver some horrible water conditions in about 10 minutes, but the scenery, solitude, variety, and ease of the trip make this the best of all worlds for me. Also, when the lake is up you can power into the Grand Canyon. I have taken four or five families in over the years and they thank me every time I see them. We ALL agree it is the coolest thing we have EVER done vacation/recreation wise including all non-boating stuff.

2) Havasu. This place is probably the shortest drive and if you can afford to stay on the water at say the Nautical Inn for example, the boat stays on the beach right in front of your room. Very convenient. In the middle of summer, the party scene is too much for many and it can get very crowded in comparison to the others. I like a couple of weekends a year here and the rest at Mead. You will find it very relaxing this time of year, very scenic, and very easy. When I go to Havasu, I have a goal to never touch my truck the entire time there. We go to dinner by boat, we pick up Pizzas for the kids by boat, we go to breakfast by boat after a 40 minute ride either direction (ther're closer breakfasts on the water, but we like the morning breakfast cruise tradition). It is just very easy and can be a lot of fun. Watch out for guys with more $ than sense. Some REALLY fast boats there.

3) Powell. It is actually the best, but just too darn far.

4) Mohave. The ramp at Katherine is such a pain in the summer that I do my best to always get a slip there. The slip rental system at Katherine is a nightmare. If you stay in Laughlin or Bullhead, it takes a good 20 - 30 minutes to actually get to the ramp, let alone launch, summer lines at the ramp can exceed an hour. Once there (southern end) there is nowhere to go but north. In the summer the prevailing wind is out of the south, so you get this nice downwind run in the AM and then you get the livin' carp scared out of you on the return. Again, I like long cruises and challenges, so this can be fun, but not for everyone on board . . . ;) This time of year it actually blows out of the north quite often, so that might be a non-issue. There are some nice coves and sights right outside of Katherine, so the big water concerns I have will probably not be an issue unless you want to make a long run somewhere. In comparison to the three above it is just kinda . . . hhmmmmm . . . less. That's it, less. Less convenient, less scenic, less variety etc. It is absolutely worth going at least once to make the trip to Hoover, but you could launch up at Willow Beach and get that within about a 1/2 hour of the ramp. The trip from Katherine to the dam and back takes almost all day . . .

This time of year I think I would still vote for Havasu. If the wind blows, you can stay around the bridge etc. Also, the nigh-time cruise around the bridge is very pretty. Check out this thread I posted after Thanksgiving this year. Wish I was going, I'd show you around ;)

Thanksgiving Havasu thread

As a side note. We love Parker too. Probably an even shorter drive than Havasu for you and staying at the Bluewater Casino can be as easy as Havasu or even easier. This time of year the water stays really low, so you are kinda restricted from goin' all the way to Parker Dam (forms Havasu). Still very scenic and if you know where the shallows are you can go all the way. If you are haulin' the boat out, you can do one day on the river and one day on the lake . . . Just another idea. Keep askin', I'll talk about these lakes as long as someone will let me . . . :D

Re: Lake Mohave

Thanks for all the info! Will check out the Nautical Inn for a future trip. Actually, the quiet of Mohave might just be what we are looking for on the trip in February, but we will let our guests decide.

Re: slip rental. Is this something that can be rented for a night or two or is it monthly?? We are true novices!! :)

Re: Lake Mohave

Mohave will be great. Sorry if I sounded harsh, just lettin' you get the benefit of 25 years going to all of them :) You will be amazed at how big the south end really is. Take a look into the big basin just to get a feel for the sheer size of these lakes. I don't recommend that you venture into that basin if there is any chance of wind. Plenty of boating between the dam and the big fat middle. Do you have a GPS? I can get you a couple of coordinates for favorite coves if you like.

Slips there can be rented on a daily basis. I'll bet you'll see none of the issues that I do in the summer. They have a flippin' lottery and you have to be at the marina at 12:00 which is why I struggle with it. Puts a big hole in the day. They're probably $20 a day and will be available. Have fun. Love to hear about it.

BTW, I live in Chino Valley, CA . . .

Re: Lake Mohave

As a side note. QC, we've discussed the powering into Grand Canyon before, and they're predicting the snow pack in the Rockies will be enough to fill or partially fill both Powell and Mead. :D :D :D :D :D  ;) .

I can't wait til next Spring to see what happens!

DR,

Watching here: Snowpack

and here: River Ops daily.

What you say sounds great. We had a killer winter last year and picked up about 18 feet at Mead. Need to keep it going. Lets keep our fingers crossed.

A little river trivia question: Why does the elevation at Havasu stay within about 4 ft. all year?

Re: Lake Mohave

Because that lake supplies water to LA and Phoenix via canals and if it drops too low the pumps suck air. :D

Colorado river trivia take 2: After Glen Canyon dam was completed, how long did it take for the Colorado River to fill Lake Powell?

Re: Lake Mohave

I think #1 is only half true. Not sure how low the intake pipes for the pumps are, but the hydraulic head needed for the Parker Dam generators requires that the water is at least at 445'. This is why there is always water in the channel, no matter what.

I am gonna guess at #2 and say 18 years . . .

I am thinking we need to plan an iboats West outing . . . wanna help?

Interesting. Who's the brainiac who engineered themselves into a corner on that one? :D Oh right, the Bureau of Reckthenation, I mean Reclamation.

That's a darn good guess. 19 years to full pool.

I have to be honest, I have stared at all of the historic levels for years. I almost said 29 and then backed off. Had to focus on previous looks at the data . . . :D

Merry Christmas DR. Serious about the get together though. Maybe early spring?

Re: Lake Mohave

I might be able to swing it QC, new baby and all. You thinking maybe a get together for the day? Or an overnighter? Havasu maybe? You should throw it out there and see what kind of response you get. I'd definitely plan on attending. We can't let the East Coasters have all the fun! :D And Merry Christmas to you and your family. :)

BTW, we already got the little critter a shiney new Mustang life jacket.

Re: Lake Mohave

Yeah, thanks. I am thinking probably one day and Havasu may be the most central although the west end of Mead could work too. Havasu is drop dead gorgeous without the crowd and has something for everybody, camping, hotels etc. Let's just keep talking. May just be me and a couple of my boys if it is early, but what the heck? Any excuse to boat . . . :D

Sounds good QC. I'm always looking for a reason to go boatin'! Either place is great, although Havasu is closer. About 3 hours. I bet there's a few folks on here that would like to go.

Hi guys,
I am planning on going the week end after March 31, that's when the Snowbirds are scheduled to vacate our house in Havasu. Yeah, I think it would be interesting to have the Desert lakes/river boaters get together!

Re: Lake Mohave

Hey ST. Merry Christmas.

I've got that weekend marked now. Let's keep talkin' and make it happen. That is a little later than I was thinking, but the weather will be awesome! Not too hot yet . . .

Havasu is the easiest for us too. As I noted above we usually end up at the Nautical Inn as I like sitting on the beach at night etc. But it is expensive. Maybe they have group rates. Some won't need to stay like ST, but others can even camp nearby too if that's their gig.

I'll mark that day too. That's far enough in advance, I should have no problem getting that weekend off. Merry Christmas guys!

DR and family.

Re: Lake Mohave

Hi QC; DR;
Wife and I just got back home from visiting our daughter and SIL (Son In Law); spending the whole Christmas day there-opening presents, played a little tennis, spa, dinner and the like; and checking the calendar; turns out that March 31 is on Friday.
Just to ensure that those who still has to work for a living -including myself-would be able to get the right date/week end off from work, I think I should be more precise on our proposed date; how about the week end of April 8?

I am sorry QC if this would push your boating itch 1 week further! But it'll still be before the Spring break crowds, I hope? And as you said, it won't be like in the midst of a dead Summer heat plus the crowds, heh!

By the way QC, I notice you live not too far from us; we live in Walnut, and we go to Chino and Chino Hills quite often.

Little trivia: what's the precipitation rate of Lake Havasu city?
