Want to see a depressing sight? Take a look at Lake Shasta in Northern CA 2007'slow water and 2010's high water. There is also a graft of the lake level to show how much it can fluctuate in a year or 2.

Then there is the lake here in North Idaho (Pend O'Reille). Low water picture is about 3 feet above the winter level, and high water picture is about 3 feet over the full pool level. Considering how big our lake is and that at the height of the run off, there was over 200,000 CFS going through the wide open dam and still that much over full, it was very impressive.

Scooper, I was on Lake Houston in early July and though it was bad then. I was hoping you would come across the anchor I lost because it was stuck in the mud and I couldn't break it loose.

I spent a weekend at Lake Livingston a couple of weeks ago and the water is down, but not too bad. There are some launches on the south side of the lake that still have plenty of water. The further north you go the levels do drop quickly though. My boat is a deep V hull and I couldn't launch/recover at the Blanchard launch because the water dropped to 3'. I ended up using Beacon bay which had 6' of water. The main part of the lake still has depths to 50'.

I am closer to Conroe and avoided going there because of the water theya re sending to Houston. The lake level is dropping 6" a week. THe lake is 5.50 feet below full pool now.

I have purchased a metal detector, but the weekends have been too busy to use it. I would love to get over to the beach on Skiers Cove and find all the lost jewelry from over the years.

Re: Lake Houston with 6' loss of water. Going out to explore "underwater" hazards.

Other than the typical "be safe, go slow, watch out" etc. suggestions, are there any suggestions for exploring a lake that is at the lowest it has been in MANY years?

I figured that at 6' below normal, I should be able to scope out all the hazards that are usually underwater, and get a better idea of what the bottom looks like.

Anybody have any suggestions of what I should do to take advantage of this low water?

This is a once- or twice-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore normally unseen portions of the lake and it's bottom.

Yes, but our average depth is 11' or so. And we are now down nearly 8'!!! The only parts with water are the deep channels, which is actually the original riverbed, and some shallows in the vicinity of it. Deepest part normally is around 25', maybe close to 30' at normal pool.

Ten years, or so, ago they put a water pumping in Stillhouse to send water to Georgetown and Austin. Thanks Austin for dragging our local lake down to nothing.

Two years ago the lakes in GA were at historic lows. It was amazing what was on the bottom. The boot thing is kinda serious, there could be a lot of deep mud. Lake Houston is normally 45' deep, so there is a bunch of exposed bottom to explore.

Wear hip boots, scooper. Two years ago the lakes in GA were at historic lows. It was amazing what was on the bottom. The boot thing is kinda serious, there could be a lot of deep mud. Lake Houston is normally 45' deep, so there is a bunch of exposed bottom to explore. Are any ramps still open?

This past Sunday we took the 1954 Alumacraft FD and 2hp honda up the Chattahoochee from the ramp at Clarks bridge to almost Lula Bridge. It was a beautiful ride and took about 5 hours including a few walks on shore. Lots of stumps and logs in the water make it quite an adventure. We saw only three other boats all day and none above the 'low water' signs.

ETA...I just got back down to Texas and it's the lowest I've ever seen the lake.
I might lend my services to a clean-up while the lake is down.
It might be good that I bought a spare blade for the chain saw..
