Hello, my old engine had electronic ignition, the new one points and condensor. I took off the points plate and replaced it with the electronic one. ( points had one black wire to right side of coil. electronic has two wires. one red and one black.)
It would not fire with the electronic hooked up, but fired right up when I put the points back in. The coil with the points set up say`s use with external resitor, The coil with the electronic say`s no outside resister required. Your idea`s please.

When you hooked up the electronics did you bypass the resistance wire (in place of a standard ballast resistor) that supplies power to the coil?

Not quite sure what you mean sir. There are two wires on each side of the coil. I believe that two of them are for the trim switch, one for the tach. and one powers the coil. I should find a proper Merc. manual. The after market one does not cover this. Cheers old boy !!

2 wires on the + side of the coil and 3 on the - side.

on the + side:
1 from the starter motor 'I' terminal, to feed full voltage to the coil during cranking
1 from the key VIA A RESISTIVE WIRE to provide 7 volts during running.

on the - side:
1 from the points and condensor
1 to the tacho
1 from the shift interrupt switch.

If you use the power feed to an electronic system from the existing ON feed from the key you will only get 7 volts (because it's via a resistive wire). You need to find a full 12 volt feed that is only on with the key in the ON position, or the electronics will not get enough power to produce spark....
