I have a 1989 Sea Ray 185BR W/140HP It has a knocking while making tight turns noticed most often when docking. I found the front ujoint very tight I replaced it with a spicer from NAPA #315G it fit and is now smooth.I'm still getting the knocking. Should I have replaced the rear also? Or should I replace the driveshaft. Can you remove the rear loint without taking the preload ring off?
Thanks for some help. Al Gotch

Yes, you should always replace both ujoints at the same time.

It is possible, by grinding off the tips of 2 tips of the retainer to JUST clear the ujoint caps, but it is not advisable. If you grind off too much, the seal in the bellhousing could squeeze out of position and allow water into the bellows, or break the ring completely while removing the ujoints.
Best to take it apart as in the service manual.
