Hey guys I'm new to the boating scene so any help is greatly appreciated!!! I bought this boat a few months ago and there is a strange knocking type noise comin from engine. I thought it might have been u joints in out drive but I took the outdrive off and the knocking noise is still there. It doesn't sound to me like a rod knocking but could be I recon. It sounds more like it's coming from the back of the engine somewhere but can't really pinpoint the noise. The sound of knockin either goes away or gets drowned out by motor sound when the Rpms go up past idle. Any help would be awesome guys! Thanks ALOT!

Is it much louder when the boat is under load? You can hear it when just idling? Harbor frieght sell a mechanics stethoscope for $4 and you can hear everything.

Could be a broken cam or crank shaft.

cbro, welcome to iboats. You really need to try and pin point the noise. At the back of the engine up high it could be exhaust flappers.... they make more of a tapping or rattle than a knock mostly at idle and quiets down at higher rpm. good luck

If you dont have a stethoscope use a long screw driver. Put the handle end on your ear and other all over the motor. You should be able to pin point the location. Listen were it gets louder and note the location.
Your shutters are located at the top of your y pipe for the exhaust at the back of the motor.

You do have the drive off right?

Re: Knock in engine please help!!!

Ok I will do that tonight!! And yea I do have the drive off of it. When the motor is running and I put my head around the back of it the noise is louder. There is a round black thing that turns that I believe is connected to the crank and I thought it was hitting in something but I couldn't see or feel anything that it would be hitting. Could the flappers still be the problem if the boat has thru hull exhaust on it??

The black thing is your coupler. And no you would not have flappers a on thru hull exhaust.
Did they remove the Y pipe or just cap off ends of it?

Is the coupler metal?? And they just capped the y pipe off it's still in there. Any other ideas since no flapper?? I'm dumbfounded and I wanna get this thing on the water lol

Re: Knock in engine please help!!!

Thats ok that the Y pipe is still in there as long as the ends are secured ( Sealed) correctly.
The coupler is rubber and metal.
Do your test tonight and get with the forum tommorrow.

Listen all over the motor, especially down on the oil pan
