Knee Brace and corner brackets for transom repair

I have been reading a lot of the postings on repairing/reinforcing transoms. I have a Gamefisher 14ft aluminum Semi-Vee hull jon boat. I have a purchased a 15hp Johnson 4stroke outboard to replace my original 15hp Gamefisher motor (it lasted me a good 20 years). The new motor is much heavier than the Gamefisher motor. I need to reinforce the transom. I can see where it is puting a lot of stress on the original small knee brace.

I am looking for some info on where to purchase a new knee brace and the corner brackets that I can mount on the corners on the top of the transom for additional support.

I also plan to reinforce the transom with a a sturdy piece of wood on the inside of the transom.

The postings I have been reading have been really helpful on planning the work, but now I just need to find a good place to get the parts.

my 14 ft has a channel for the botom of the wood which runs from side to side and is very sturdy. but some channels i have seen are pcs of alum shaped like a Z(only the vert line is straight) but u might be able to use a c chanell. the 3/4 ext plywood alone bolted would prob do it as well on that size boat

MBarr, get out the phone book and look for a local glass shop that does storefront repairs/installation. The metal that is used is aluminum, different sizes, angles, and channels. I am sure you can buy a scrap piece for next to nothing. I have to rebuild my knee brace and I do storefront. I have a 2 1/4" x 4 1/2" that will work perfect for my repair. Give it a shot.

Thanks for the replies - I figured I might have to build my own. Found a good posting on how to fabricate the knee brace. Also thanks for the idea about the glass shops - there is one near where I work so I will check that out too.

i have seen somewhere that they made one out of angle stock in the shape of a right triangle
