I need to know how to make a kill switch for a 70 hp johnson outboard 3 cyl engine. The engine is a early 70's model and the kill switch that came on it was a plastic piece that would turn the key to the off position if the lanyard was pulled. I want to replace it with a toggle switch and lanyard, with wires to the engine its self. I just don't know how to connect the wires to kill the engine when the switch is flipped!
Thanks
Tom

Re: Kill switch

welcome to iboats!

You can get a kill switch at iboats or any marine store, got mine at Academy sports...connect one lead to the black/yellow ignition wire, the other to ground...piece of cake!

Switch is open for normal run position, closed to shut engine off.

Re: Kill switch

When you turn the key to off, it connects the black ground wire on the ignition to the black and yellow wire that runs back through the harness to the powerpack.

That stops the motor by grounding the powerpack. If you ran additional wires from the ignition switch black, and black and yellow wires and installed a kill switch to them, it would work fine.

There are kill switch/ lanyard kits for that from your dealer.
