Kill switch question

I have a 1983 35 H.P. Johnson. This was a tiller motor converted to a remote. On my remote box, there is no kill switch, and I do not see any location where I can put one in on the control box. My question is this: Can I locate a kill switch on the outside of the box and do the electrical hook up on the wiring leaving the control box in some manner? If so, what color wire am I looking for to ground out with the kill switch to kill the motor if/when needed? Thanks.

You will need to post a picture of your control box.----After market kill switches are available from Amazon.

The key should kill the motor when turned off.
Yes, the key does shut the motor off when I turn the key off. Sorry, I may have not made it clear what I am after. I am wondering if I can install a kill switch that is on a tether that I connect to myself so if I fall overboard, the kill switch would activate and shut the motor off while the key is still on.

I will need to wait until my grandson comes around to post a picture as I do not have the knowledge or the phone to do it with. I have a little "flip" phone is all. (yep, old school I know). As for the after market kill switches, I have seen many of them on line. I was asking if I can wire the switch in to the wiring outside of the control box as there is no hole or knockout available for which to place the aftermarket kill switch into on the control box itself. Hope I am making this clear so you can understand what I am saying.

You can mount the kill switch on your dash if you want but you will have to wire it into the box.

Post Pic of control box, if it's a white or black box with a red plug on the end of the harness it should have a spot for a man overboard switch.

Are you talking about a red plug at the end of the harness inside of the box or at the other end? There is no plug at the other end as this is a tiller conversion and whoever did it just used a wire harness and connected it under the cowling of the motor with no plug on it. The box is a white OMC box, one handle and a cold fast idle lever. Has the key built into it and the box is side mounted on the boat.

Wires can be so confusing !-----But many of those white control boxes had a kill switch mounted on them.----So easy to do in my opinion.

There is no room (no knockout) to insert the switch into the box itself. I would like to just mount the switch into my dashboard, and wire it into the harness outside of the control box if this would do the trick. All I need to know is what color is the wire inside of the harness (at the box) that would need to be grounded to stop the motor?
I know at one time when I shut my key off, the motor kept running and would not turn off. There was a BROWN wire under the cowl on my motor that came disconnected. When I reconnected this brown wire, the motor shut off when I shut the key. Is the wire just outside the box inside of the harness a brown wire as I am assuming? I do not want to take the box apart if I can avoid this. Thanks for all of your help again by the way!!

You said the motor doesn't have the original wiring. So how can we know what colors are there? But the usual kill wire is black with a yellow stripe. Grounding it to solid black will stop the motor
Now about that brown wire?---??????

Good point! I will trace that brown wire back to the box from the motor as I know for a fact when that brown wire became disconnected, the key switch would not turn the motor off. if I trace that brown wire back to the box, I will fid that is is brown all the way leading into the box or if it changes to black with yellow stripe or some different color. thank you!
