I realized my engine was not stopping when the safety lanyard is removed from the Kill Switch. Points of interest:
  • The Kill Switch was working last summer
  • Upon identifying the problem, I thought for sure the Kill Switch failed, given this is a 1986 Johnson 150, and I replaced the Kill Switch with an OEM new old stock part.
  • Problem still exists. I am able to turn the engine over with the lanyard removed from the switch.
  • The separate Neutral Switch is functional and prevents starting when engine is in gear
The Kill Switch (3 wires) is wired with the black wire going to ground on the start switch. One black with yellow trace wire is connected to the Raised M terminal of the start switch. The second black with yellow trace wire is connected to the wiring harness black wire with yellow tracer.

Where is my problem? Do I have an open on the black with yellow tracer wire going back to the engine?

Trying to remember this correctly but need clarification.

Motor turns over but won't start?

Funny thing on those or the newer ones. With mine it runs when it's clicked in and if you pull it off it dies.....but when it's off it will run. They say they do that so if something happens you can get it started and underway if needed. (Like in a man overboard situation.

Your 80's though...don't think they had that.

The lanyard / kill switch does NOT prevent cranking.-----It kills spark should operator leave the helm.

Possibly, I am not testing the new switch properly? To clarify, the boat is in the driveway. I pulled the lanyard's switch plunger depressing feature, and then tried the starter. Giving the key a brief turn to engage/bump the starter, to my surprise the starter motor engaged. Are you saying this is normal, but the engine will not start since the lanyard's switch plunger depressing feature is pulled? Please confirm. Thanks

If this is the case, I will have to test in the water by starting the engine and then pulling the lanyard to ensure the motor stops.

Thanks for the schematic. My Kill Switch closes and provides continuity between the ground and each of the black with yellow tracer wires when the lanyard's switch plunger depressing feature is removed.

The lanyard switch is NOT part of the starter motor circuit !----There is a switch in the control box that only allows the starter to operate if lever is in neutral.---So simple.

Thanks racerone, I will confirm the Kill Switch stops the ignition spark when I get it in the water this weekend.

might be something at the plug end at the motor side, like a bad or corroded kill wire. check to see if the terminal is clean at both ends. you can do a simple continuity test while your back there. if it was a newer quickstart single pack motor id say test the kills at the pack but you have 2 packs.
