I have a 85 hp Suzuki engine, unsure of the year but I’ll post a pic, I’m wondering if anyone knows how hard a kill switch install would be and why the engine won’t turn off when I put the key in the off position

Wires on ignition switch are damaged , loose, not connected to correct terminals, or the switch went bad internally.

At the other end, wire not connected, or bad ground connection.

Ok it seems like it shuts the batteries off so I’m thinking it may have a blown fuse or bad connection on the motor? . Is there like a specific wire I should be looking for I guess

Sorry, I don't have any service manuals or diagrams for the old suzukis.

Search on line for a wiring diagram or service manual that covers your motor serial number.

So messed with some of the wires, it looks like the preemvious owner did a pretty makeshift job. So I turned the key nothing happened after the tinkering, but the tilt trim still worked. Put it all back and the little lightbulb he had down there flickers on and off and it’s all black wires so idk what that’s for there’s a white wire on the ignition connected to a red wire going to the harness and a white wire that looks like it should be plugged in somewhere to the ignition but it’s not. Anyone by chance live near San Diego 😂😂

Since you or us have no idea what wires are what because of lame wiring practices, you have to be the sleuth in this. Here is picture of what the ignition switch pins should be. Keep in mind the wire colors are for a Mercury outboard but these switches are very universal. The pins are identified on the diagram. You need to figure out what wires come from the engine.

Ok so I’ve got everything figured out except the magneto. Does one of them connect to a 12v or hot wire and one a ground or both ground

Also I’ve figured out now that it looks like one of the female ends on the plastic 8 pin plastic adapter is messed up. Should I strip the wires and connect them to each other?
