Last night I'm watch Tom and Jerry cartoons with my daugher Amber (6yrs). There is a scene where Tom has a gun and the bullets fall out. Amber says "Papi, you have those". I replied, you mean cap guns? She says "No. Bullets." So I asked her how she new. She told me that they are on top of the tall dresser and she found them.

Then we watch the cartoon some more. Then she asks me "Why do you have bullets?". I tell her they are for my gun.

She accepts that answer and watches the cartoon some more in silence. Tom ends up getting shot full of holes (of course).

Then she asks me "Why are some missing?".

I nearly had juice come out my nose!

Please Mark, hide them where the little one's can't find/get to them.
Don't want to read about it in the news.

I would educate about gun safety 1st. No matter where you hide it they always seem to find them. If you educate and spend time showing them like i was taught you have a better understanding of WHY YOU NEED TO LEAVE THEM ALONE!! Kids are curious but explaining it makes more sense to them instead of them trying to figure it out on the own, Thats when it can get dangerous.

A locked gun cabinet is a good place to put them.
Here in the UK you would lose your firearms licence if all guns and ammo were not locked away.
Having your weapons locked away does not negate the need for gun safety, but it does eliminate any accidents.

Like RPJS says, a good gun safe is a pretty good bet at keeping the little one's away from the stuff.
That crap just scares me to death. I hear about it just about ever day around here of a little one getting hold of a gun. They are locking the parent/s up now if that happens. Don't matter if anyone gets hurt or not.

You need to teach her that if she see's a gun leave it alone. You can lock up your guns, but you can't lock up the guns at their friends house. I take my girls shooting so they see the destruction. They've also been instructed that if they are at a friends house and a gun is pulled out (even if it's a toy, or their friend thinks it a toy), they are to leave and find an adult, that there are real guns that look like toys.

I conceal carry a Keltec P-32. It looks just like a toy gun.

To keep them safe at other peoples houses, they must be educated about fireams!

Don't worry folks, my guns are locked and stored in the attic where the kids can't get to them.

Thanks for your concerns!

Mark

Mark,

I believe you that you keep your guns locked up.

but PLEASE, PLEASE, make sure she understands about firearms in general. Our kids are too precious for accidents to happen. You can't control what happens at their friends house. They need to know what to do if a gun is brought out.

I'm not just preaching here....when I was in 9th grade, my little brother (who was in 6th grade) was accidentally shot in the head and died. This hits very close to home for me. Am I against guns....no way....but I am for education about them!

Very sad, But well said KeltonKrew. Education is the key to learning about gun safety.
