^^^^ move as fast as you safely can to a "you do" as I did, too. Close supervision while they're doing it the first few times, and then give them room to make some healthy "learn from 'em" mistakes.

As my kids have been more engaged in rigging up, de-rigging, driving and docking they've gotten much more into doing it right ... except the 13 year old. Gonna' have to work on him a bit more.

another approach: how a friend of mine, now a top outdoorsman and boater, was instructed:

When you send them out in the boat alone you give them one instruction, and only one: "don't screw up."

When they return you ask one question and only one question: "did you screw up?"

That about covers it.
