I need a kicker on my 18 ft 1980 holiday but the transom will not allow for mounting. The way it is curved is just not going to accept a motor. I'm not a fan of brackets. I don't really want to mess with making a new transom either. Does anyone have any solutions they have seen?? Your input is appreciated. Thanks.

what's your objection to a bracket? seems like absent one of those, you've sorta decided yourself out of having a kicker at all. i guess you could pull the main outboard off the transom whenever you want to use the kicker..... or install the jet drive from a title-less jetski belowdecks?;)

I was wondering the same thing...and came to the same conclusion. It is either modify the transom to accept the kicker, or go with a bracket. I will go with the bracket when I find my kicker.

I dont know how much the transome has changed over the years..

But I am having a hard time thinking of where this curve is?
Honestly a kicker bracket is the only way to go..
What is the main power? OB?

Definately use the bracket, and do yourself a favor, get one that goes up and down. Have had one on my boat for years and that is the best way to add the kicker, gets it up and out of the way when not in use.

How about a zippity doo dah trolling motor mounted at the bow? They make some powerful ones these days. I've been considering this option but haven't decided if it is crazy or not yet. Of course I'm not planning on going off shore, at least not far off shore. Even inland, it might not get me back to the landing, but I figure it will get me out of the channel and to the edge where I can anchor and call for help, or wait on the tide to change. Hmmm.

I barley had room to mount a 9.9 Merc.4stroke next to my main OB a 200 Johnson. This is on a 22ft Holiday. Granted the V6 200 is a bigger motor than a 115 .

do you have 13 -16 ft tide changes a electric trolling motor would be useless where I fish the Pacific Ocean. I think a well arranged kicker bracket is a safer and more efficent way to go.

You got pics of that setup? I wish to do the same.

Probably more like 4 to 6 feet tide change around here. I prefer the rivers and marsh to the open ocean. Still, you're probably right.

Could you just mount a pad onto the transom. That way it would raise the kicker a few inches to clear the curve in the transom. You could test this solution by taking a piece of 2X10 and clamping it to your transom. You could them measure for clearance and find the proper height for the leg. That would tell you if a replacement pad would work. I have seen pads mounted to transom around here on fiberglass boats and it seems to work.

Thanks you for the responses! Here are some picks. This is the idea I am having at this time. I intend to use stainless or aluminum plate instead of the 1/2 inch treated plywood. I guess this sort of extends the transom. I just hope the motor is not too high after it sits on the new part. Maybe I should measure,, huh.

P.S. Can anyone recommend a GOOD kicker bracket. I'm still looking at both options.

Garlack makes a good bracket as well as Taylor Made. Depends on what to buy if you have a 2stroke or a 4 stroke kicker, OMC makes an piston assist bracket. Again a 4stroke is considerable heaver than a 2 stroke. (Is your boat a glass or an Aluminum Hull??? Actually a more distant view of the transom would be better to look at and advise you best. I do not recogonize the curve in the transom area that I see???

You can not beef uip the transom to much or your kicker clamps will not go over it . Whats a few holes in the boat as long as you seal them when instaled. 4200 0r 5200 marine sealer will work.

I think the curve he is talking about is where the transom curves down from the gunwales. I think you would be ok using a bracket to mount the kicker. Theres not alot of room for it but I'm sure you could make it work.
