Nothing like having to carry a Portable Tank along if it is a 2 stroke. Maybe with a 4 Stroke Kicker, you could tap into the Boats Fuel line
I have a totally separate fuel supply for my aux motor. Thinking that if I have to use it to get home if the main motor goes down I would want to not be reliant on the fuel used in the motor that just stopped in case that was the problem .

When was the last time you had a fuel problem in any spark plug motor? Mine was circa 1986.

Bad fuel, (water in gas) is the most popular issue with fuel. Had it all the time about 10 years back from all the major fuel stations. Local farmers created a co-op fuel station for all the locals. Never gave had a fuel problem since. However, those that still use the popular stations still have issues.

Your lucky and your fuel station does a great job if maintaining their stuff...
Yeah but that's like a few hundred stations in multiple states last 50 years or so. Not luck. And along the way all my boat buddies have had similar amount of 'luck'

Well circa 2015....my gas sipping E-tec ran out of fuel within site distance of my local marina...at night no less. My 4 stroke kicker was plugged into the main tank. My local dealer called it a Yamarude.

After talking with the coast guard while my super grumpy friend came and saved my but, I got home.

Sold that fine yammy and put a 1987 8 horse in my boat just to have a separate tank. In the ocean it should probably should be required.

All kinds of things can happen to fuel tanks.

Happened one other time before that.

Hard to fix stupid! 🤫

Cheers

Buying a kicker to save fuel while trolling makes no sense when you think about.

Horse power is horse power. It takes the same amount of fuel to generate X horse power no matter the max output of the motor. The only difference is the efficiency of the technolgy developing the power.

A 4 stroke is more efficient than a 2 stroke and fuel injection is more efficient than a carburetor

One (1) horsepower = 746 watts
746 watts = 2,544 BTU
112,000 to 116,000 BTU in a gallon of E10 fuel.

Guess I am old school, having that extra motor to get you back is a safety measure in my brain. Having a small boat, not interested in having extra weight hanging on the transom. Based on Mercury specs, my 1992 two stroke motor uses approx 1-1.5 gallons per hour more fuel per hour than a new 4 stroke motor of the same hp. At 9 K for a new motor and saving 1.5 gallons of fuel at 3 bucks a gallon and almost 50# more weight, not in a hurry to replace with a new four stroke. And my two stroke is faster...

In the mid 70s we had Boat with a Kicker. Usually it was not on the Boat, but on a Cartopper. One day I and few others were going across the Lake(12 miles) to go fishing. Had made that Journey several dozen times, however for some reason I decided to put the Kicker on. Good thing I did, as the Main Motor's Ignition Switch shorted out and left us with a Burnt Starter and no Power to the Ignition System. I was 17 and wasn't too Mechanically Inclined yet. That little 5 1/2 got us back home, took a couple of hours after sunset, but it got us back.

My main reason for an aux motor is as a back up ,its also handy for trolling . Now that my main motor is a 4 stroke there is little point in using the aux for trolling economy-wise.
Oh yeah .....and I couldnt get the Mrs to go fishing without the aux .......not that having wimmin in a small boat is a whole lot of fun but her presence doubles the daily limit😆.
As far as I can remember the only time I needed the aux was the 2 times that Jonnie melted its pistons and one of them was a 30km plod home from D'urville island .
