Re: Kicker install for Islander

Good to know, thanks.
I have a price for a 9.9 Suzuki with power tilt and remote for $2400. This is the best price by far of the motors I've looked at. However I know little about the Suzuki.
That's nearly 1/2 the price of the 9.9 Honda and the Honda is cheaper than the Mercury. Lots of incentives to get rid of non-current motors right now.

I don't think I've ever seen a Suzuki that small. I'd bet it's a Tohatsu (nothing wrong with that).

Re: Kicker install for Islander

I'll have to send you pics of my setup. I have a 1986 16' aluminum starcraft Fish Master(considerably lighter than your boat), with a 65hp Merc and a 4.5hp merc kicker. I have a johnson 9.9, clinton 7.5 (1 cyl.) Mercury 4.5 (1 cyl.) and a 4 hp Johnson (2 cyl.) I actually like to keep my motors portable, and I have run an easy steer into my main steering line, which can be removed. Looks wise, I like the Merc since they match, but for function, portability, and smooth running, I like to have the 4hp 2 cyl. Johnson. The 9.9 moves my boat around 6-7mph with just me on it, and the 4 hp at full throttle runs at around 4-5mph. I use the pull start on the motor, and the throttle on the motor. I just steer up front. For backup and a troller, you dont really need much more. How often do you adjust your trolling speed, and when you are using the motor for a main motor failsafe, all you do is start her up and steer home! But, I might add, that I do not have a brand new boat. I've got around $2000(and tons of hours) in all of my gear. But I try not to get tied up in my gear too much, because it just keeps me off the water. I've got a 1981 Johnson 9.9 that is just as reliable as any brand spankin' new expensive 4 stroke. Function, not fashion, I always say....

What do you fellows say about the fixed mount vs the hinged mount like the Panther offering? I have read about both and its much like the Ford vs Chevy.
I like the idea of a fixed mount but it would have to be a lot lower and would hang off the boat quite a bit. What about towing? Would the motor have to be removed to prevent damage to the transom?
And how do the hinged mounts fare when towing with the motor attached? I think my brain is going to explode....
sutor623, I am looking at an older Honda but I want to keep the trolling motor a 4 stroke so I don't have to cart a seperate source of fuel along. Plus I am tired of mixing fuel!

Gotcha, yeah I didnt think about that. I like to keep my motors using the same gas as well. In that case I agree with you, take a look at the 8horse honda.

The force of the motor propelling the boat is far more than any forces that will be generated while towing. Just secure everything to eliminate bouncing.

I suggest suppling the kicker from the water separator, thus keeping water out of the kicker.

i've towed mine a lot with the kicker setup i have, Hasn't budged.. keep it tight, and like Ez be sure to eliminate bounce.
