I have an 88 mercruiser 260, mercruiser alpha 1 drive, 4bbl its all stock, with some new components. I had the problem while out the other day. The key stopped working to start the engine. I jumped it at the solenoid and it turns over, then jumped power to the coil. It runs great and couldn't find the issue. want to go fishing but the alternator isn't charging so i would get stuck. If anybody can help!!!
Its my first post hope i didn't forget anything

Re: Key won't start engine

I would start with the ignition switch and make sure it's powering wires as it should when the key is turned ... r&r part if shes bad. Oh and welcome to iboats!

I actually have that as my next step, I am going to run a temporary set of wires from key switch to solenoid to eliminate that as the issue. I tried a new key switch and didn't work, checked the solenoid and its brand new. I'll let you know what i find tomorrow

Welcome aboard Full Circle, If new members would only read the stickies they would get much faster help.
Does the engine crank? Does it crank and not start? "Key doesn't work" doesn't really say much.

Thanks for the advice i am on my way to check it out. I apreciate the help you guys are great. and i'll let you know what i find

Until you answer the questions I asked, I'm afraid that thread is only PART of your problem, has nothing to do why had to jump the coil.
