Have the original MercControl AND key from 1971. I only have the one key and no spare. Have checked all the local marine repair shops and searched thought 100's of old keys and nothing. Dealers are telling me I can't even order one from Mercury. Its too old.

I REALLY don't want to replace the ignition switch. Any ideas where I might get a key. The number on the key is A51015. It has the Keikhaefer name on the key.

Closest I came to finding a match was a C51015. Same tumbler configuration but the groves were a different size.

Moody, There are only a few keys that work all Mercs, and you have the number. I would call around to some Merc Dealers until you find one who has it, and ask them to send it to you.

My local Merc Dealer here at the Jersey Shore has them hanging on a nail in his store.

Yeh, this number is stumping everyone. Being told it should be a 3 digit number BUT, my key has Keikhaefer stamped right on it below the A51015. When I rewired the controller earlier this summer I noticed a sticker on the ignition switch with the same A51015 number on it so it should be a valid key number.

I did find, as mentioned, a C51015 key that also had 130 stamped on it.

Going to the largest and oldest Merc dealer in the area, 30 miles away, tomorrow to search thru his "old stock" of keys. Wish me luck :)

Success!!! Went to the marina and spoke with the counter person. She dug out a big box of keys and said "take a look". After 20 minutes of sifting thru keys and not finding a single match, a tech happened to walk by and ask what I was looking for. I explained the situation and gave him the key.

He comes back 30 seconds later with exactly what I needed. He knew exactly where to look and even found a current key number, 123.

I bought 2 spares just in case :).
