What size did you order?

You can actually get them from Radio Shack type store for under a buck. Tip courtesy of F_R

Got them off of iboats, same kind the gale uses. I have to mod the case a little bit since they are made for vertical mount and the tn uses a horizontal mount. I saw that post by F_R a few hours after i ordered them. I actually think I have some in one of my electronic parts bins.

This is an interesting thread. I myself have a TN-26 and recently picked up at Gale 5D12V (actually a Viking brand sold through Eatons in Canada, but the same motor was a Montgomery-Ward Sea King). My Viking may end up as parts since it is incomplete. The lower unit is the same as the 1954/55 Johnson 5? & Evinrude 7?.

Since the Vikings were Gale motors, here is a link to some manuals that could serve you well. Here is a link to the Viking homepage by Richard Paquette: http://richardlpaquette.ca/Vikings.htm

I have to drop a note to Lloyd myself for some gaskets, but I have to figure out postage to Canada and how it works regarding the SSAE envelope coming back to Canada. The TN runs nicely but leaks fuel out the carb (no seals).

Thanks a bunch. That 51-63 gale service manual is a huge find. How's the viking 5d12 going?

F_R also told me what seals to get and where to get them for the TN-26 if anyone wants that info I can pm it.

I have some non hardening permatex gasket sealant, since I was planning on reusing the gaskets I was thinking about using a little bit of this sealant. What do you think?

For the carb? NO, dont want to do that. They go on dry.

How do they look? They are pretty easy to make from scratch.

So far I've cleaned, changed seals and impeller on the Johnson lower end, rebuilt the ignition on the Gale, cleaned the carb on the gale and changed the condensers on the Johnson. (rest of the ignition looks good and coils test out) Still have to clean the Gale's gas tank, (johnson's is actually pristine), clean and install new seals and impeller in the Gale's lower end, and clean the carb on the Johnson. (Waiting on leather seals from Lloyd to do that)

I never know what I might find in these forums. Thanks to TN-25 I now have a gale service manual for my gales!

Hopefully. Found some sand in and around the water pump on the gale, and the shaft is marred up from what I read was shifting with 2 high of rpms? only a 1/2 teaspoon of water or so came out the rest was oil, should I swap the seals or you think I can get away with running it and checking for water after the first run?

Awesome! Many of us here have helped others and have also been helped by others. I bought a nifty rig from a member that simplifies O-ring removal on the pressure tank fuel coupling. Others have e-mailed parts lists.

Those TN/TD motors may show good compression, but another thing to watch for is tight bearing clearances between the crank & bushings. If they get sloppy they are not rebuildable, and they can cause funny running because the fuel mixture that is pressurized in the crankcase before going through the port into the combustion chamber can leak into the opposite cylinder through the crankcase bushings. The factory built them with very tight clearance so they wouldn't leak pressure into the opposite cylinder, and when they get too loose, Johnson said to replace the block. That is kind of difficult to do when the engine went out of production 60 years ago.

Because of the bronze bushing, run lots of oil in the fuel. They were originally 16:1 on straight 30 weight oil, but you can go as lean as 24:1 with modern TCW-3 oil. Never run it on 50:1!

Good advice! I only run 16:1 on my 3d11, plan on running the same in these 2. I'd much rather foul a spark plug than cook a powerhead! Got the Gale 5D10 done, just gotta wait till an above freezing day to test it in the barrel and make sure I'm finished. gale 5d10.jpg Just need to clean the carb on the Johnson TN-26 and that one will be ready for the test tank as well.

What's your guy's advice on changing out packing washers? I made a few out of fiber gasket for my 3d10, but the ones in theses motors seem ok. I guess I won't know for sure till I can run them, but is it worth it to go ahead and dig them out and change them or should i see if they leak first?
Got the leather seals from Lloyd today, cylinder came right out as well did the old washers and brass washers, cleaned the carb up ( way more complex than the gale carb) and it wasn't very dirty at all. Decided to go ahead and change the plug wires as well since i have the time and it just seems like a good idea.
I can't find where, but i did read about a guy who cuts shear pins out of brass rods instead of steel since they will sheer faster in hopes of protecting the motor from damage due to bottoming out. Is this a good idea, or am I gonna end up going thru brass shear pins like popcorn?
