I already figured out what coils, plugs, impellers to get and ordered them. Wondering if anyone knows the right settings for the carburetors. I'm assuming the Gale is the same as my gale 3D11 since they look almost identical. so 1/2 turn from gently set. Haven't even ventured into the Johnson yet, but since I spent so much time lurking on these forums in order to get my Gale 3D11 running and to figure out what parts I needed for my other two I figured I'd register and ask about it first. I've noticed a lot of people here are pretty knowledgeable. Put all the motor names in the title in case anyone like me is googleing there new motor and it happens to be one of the three I've already researched extensively.

I guess you already know the "settings" are just preliminary to get it running, then fine tune it running on a boat. OK, the TN carburetor has the high speed adjustment wheel on the gas tank and the slow speed needle is in the rotary valve inlet on the front of the crankcase. High speed= open it "enough", say about 1 1/2 turns. Slow speed= these are very sensitive. Open it 5/8 to begin and turn and tune with very small adjustments when running at idle.

I too have found the 5/8 on the low to be pretty accurate on all my TNS.

The following site will really help with the TN

New Page 1

Im surprised you found an impeller. They are getting harder to get. I bored out an impeller from a newer 5.5hp for mine.

That is not terrible, like I said, they are hard to find.

Not much work to modify a 5.5hp impeller though, just a bit of fine tuning.

They have carb gasket kits for the T series motors as well. Havent seen that in a while. Although looks like they just made them, I dont think they are NOS or anything.

I haven't ventured into the tn's carb yet, cleaned the Gale's last night and was able to save that gasket and the leather seals on the needle and the fuel valve seem like there in good shape.

The leather washers are often shot and will leak when you prime. If so, a fellow aomci member sells them.

Send $7.00 per set (cash only, no checks) and SASE (self addressed stamped envelope) to: Lloyd Lautner, 9289 North Long Lake Road, Traverse City, Michigan 49685

Just put the cash in the envelope, I also sent him a pm in an off chance to see if he has seals for the gales. When I get the seals for the TN I'll probably compare them to the Gale seals and if they're the same size I'll order another set off of him.

I have not seen him online in a while. Better luck reaching him on the aomci.org forum.

Regardless he is very trustworthy, if he gets your money you will get your washers.

Just dropped the SASE and $7 cash in the mail today. Also picked up new seals for both motors thanks to F_R. He really knows his stuff.

Once I have an extra $50 (next week probably, got insurance and car payment this week) I plan on joining aomci.org seems like that is the place to learn about these things.

Ill tell you, the Antique Outboarder is worth the cost of admission alone! I love reading it when it comes.

The friends/experiences/knowledge you gain at the meets/shows is priceless.

When I only had the one motor I wasn't 2 worried about it, since I'm mainly just a fisherman and just needed to get a little motor running to supplement my trolling motor on my canoe. Then I got it running. I've been working on engines my whole life, and I never saw a engine that I could get to idle down as low as my Gale 3D11. These old OMC's are really built well. I'm afraid I've got another hobby I can't afford, lol.

Talked to F_R and will probably end up picking up a timing tool off of him for the Gale in the next week or two. Any advice on getting the timing right for the tn-26? Not sure I even wanna mess with it, the points, coils, and condensers look great. Gonna change out the condensers just to be on the safe side.tn26 coils.jpg

Just use your feeler gauge on the points. Then clean.

Im hit and miss with those coils. Do they have continuity across the secondary?

From the ground lead that goes underneath the bolt to the spark plug lead should get you about 3-8k ohms resistance. You should bury the needle on the primary(no resistance), from the ground lead to the wire that goes to the points.

got 3.58k ohms on one coil and 3.65k ohms on the other, No resistance on the primary, I hope this is what you meant buy burying the needle.

I went ahead and ordered condensers, not sure if they are the correct capacitance, but I figured they would be close enough since they are for an OMC ignition.
