Getting there. have a question though.. Should virtually all the wood be encased in glass? I will with the deck, but in the case of the rear seat structure, should I mat/cloth all the wood? (bottom pic) It's stitched in with 6in biaxial tape, and all has three costs of resin, but just wondering if it should all be covered in cloth and/or mat. Opinions appreciated. This thing is solid as the proverbial rock even as-is...

-Roger

I would say unless you don't mind spending the money on glassing the entire seat structure, you can paint the seat structures with a good paint that will soak in and protect from the weather. I used polyurethane on my center console and seats, several coats worth, and no way is that wood getting wet.

CCrew, looking good :D I'm of the same opinion as JasonJ, polyurethane for the seat structures and upholstery covered wood. I also prefer to thin it down for the first coat to aid penetration. Also, I'm curious on the screw spacing you used on your deck. I'll be screwing mine down in the next week or so and just wondering what you heard/used ;)

I had used stainless screws every six inches on mine, if that helps. Probably overkill, but I am okay with that...

Mine's even more overkill than Jasons... Mine are every 4" :D

I understand the Polyurethane, but the wood's coated w/CPES then three coats of resin. Will polyurethane bond?

-Thanks!
Roger

Hey CCrew, for once we have a case where a smaller "dimension" is a good thing in a comparison :D :D :D :D

CCrew, I assume that the lateral floor joints are over the top of the 3/4" support bulkheads shown in your original post. Did you make those bulkheads thicker b4 you laid the flooring and did you extend those bulkheads from the stringers out to the hull to support the seams there?

Boomyal,

The lateral bulkheads are based on the original design, and are only between the stringers. The only one that actually supports the floor is the one forward of the gas tank. On the gunwale side of the stringer the original design had nothing, my design has a 6'wide x 8" long pad that's screwed to the underside of the deck across the joint. Since the distance from the stringer to the deck edge is only 14", that seemed to be sufficient. On the front section, the aft side of the bulkhead was reinforced w/a 1x3 for the deck to rest on, and also there's another 1x3 on the forward side that supports a second 3/4" 25 1/2 x54" panel that actually makes the floor where the ski locker will be cut 1 1/2" thick. That panel being 54" when the center section under the consoles was installed makes a 25 1/2x 6" pad for the very front section of the deck to mount. That panel was covered w/ 1 1/2oz mat overlapping the panel and stringers before the deck was screwed to it. Deck's more solid than the floors in my house!

Roger

What is covered with CPES is sealed, so as long as the sunlight stays off it, no need to paint. Anything not coated in cpes should be painted to help prevent rot. I would suggest an oil bas primer thined with penetrol, then maybe a top coat--but for the top coat you can use the "oops" paint most places sell for just a buck or so if the color doesn't matter. I'd paint anything you thought might get gass or oil spilled on it (Under engine?)

Tom
