I need a lower unit for my '79 Johnson 140 and want to be sure that I get the right one on ebay.

1979 model
Engine model 140TL79R
Lower unit number is uncertain but I believe it is a 389818(?)

When you look for the spline number, can I assume that I'm counting the splines for the prop?
Lower unit length is measured from where to where?
It's fine if it's an Evinrude, as I have to paint the engine anyway. Numbers are probably the same anyway, right?

Yes on the spline number
Lower unit unit is normally a long shaft or short shaft. If you post a photo i can tell as im not sure on measurements.

I make the lower unit number to be 0431642 which is the superseded number from yours listed. So should be the same. Gees they are pricey,
Why are you replacing it? Did you destroy most parts of it?
