Just received the parts for it... Never thought ordinary parts looked so beautiful! Time to start getting dirty!

Needed a small quick victory so I replaced the thermostat first... took about 5 mins :) now looking at the coils... working up to the lower as I at least have some experience with motors but none with outboard boat motors. I've run into a small.. (maybe silly) issue. I can't get the flywheel off. Not sure how/where I should "jam" it in order to take the nut off. Suggestions?

A harmonic balancer puller kit should have what you need. I tried the $7.00 version from Harbor Freight and it broke with very little pressure on it but some members have used it successfully. Others have been able to borrow/rent a puller from their local auto parts store. Worst case, you might have to buy one. I just saw one at Sears last week for $19.99. I made my own with 1/2inch steel plate. Just make sure the three pulling bolts are grade 8 and the proper threads so you don't strip the flywheel holes. Many have re-tapped their flywheels for larger bolts. Also, check the depth of the holes and mark the bolts accordingly so the bolts do not extend below the bottom of the flywheel and damage ignition system components. Some members recommend leaving the crankshaft nut in place after loosening it to prevent the flywheel from popping off. Penetrating fluid may help. Some members report using heat but it scares me. Good luck!

EDIT: I have used a section of chain in the starter ring gear to prevent rotation but you have to be very careful how it is secured so you don't damage something else.

I've looked at that duckworks page and saw all the lower work he did but not the top part. Thanks for the link. Thought I'd be fine with an edge puller but from what I'm reading I'm likely to damage the flywheel if I do so now canvasing friends for a bolt puller. Likely end up buying one I only have one friend that plays around with this stuff the way I do and having just moved from out west he is rather short on tools.

DON"T pull it on the edge - use a harmonic balance puller with grade 8 bolts. I use a nylon ratchet strap wrapped around the flywheel a couple times and tightened using the ratchet, to hold the flywheel.

I was thinking of using a ratchet strap... where do you anchor the strap? On the motor or on something else like part of the stand?

Ratchet strap worked very well.
the Nut is loose... Now I just have to find a puller.

I have a 57 lark. Does anyone out there possibly know the weight of this motor or where I could find out? Taking it off and weighing it is not an option for me at this time.
