i was just given a boat from a friend, the flooring needs to be replaced but i haven't pulled it up yet. anyone have any suggestions on how and where to start. the boat has been stripped but for the steering wheel and the cabling from it. i really don't have much information on it but for the coast guard plate i found. the information is 16E O/B 7801240. that and its a fiberform(Fibreform?). any suggestions, ideas or advice is greatly appreciated. it doesn't seem to be in bad condition but this is a first for me.

Re: just getting started on my first restoration project. questions about a Fibreform

Welcome to iBoats . . .

Pictures are always good, so post a bunch, if you can.

Lots of threads on this forum with 'soft' or 'rotted' floor and then it leads to more trouble underneath. So, just be aware to look beyond the obvious as you dig into it. Most folks start by tearing up the floor with some shallow cuts, etc. and then see what the structure underneath looks like.

I believe the first number in the SN indicates she's a 78' model. If so, being 35 yrs old and having a soft deck, you need to be forewarned that this is a good indication that the substructure (stringers, bulkheads, and Transom) are more than likely in bad shape and will need to be replaced. This is a big and costly job. As tpenfield suggests, you should check the links at the bottom of your thread and look at what some of the others here on the forum have been doing so you will know what you are getting yourself into.;)

Re: just getting started on my first restoration project. questions about a Fibreform

I pulled up part of the floor today and checked the transom. the transom, although wet is still firm. Doubt that it needs to be replaced. the Flooring, on the other hand is in serious need of being replaced as are the stringers. between the stringers is a white, waterlogged foam. I'm Assuming that it is for vibration control and possiblly structural support. the question i have, is can it be dried out, if not what is it and where do i go to replace it. i would post pictures but for some reason the files aren't loading.
