A little back story....
I fish "A LOT". I have had the same pair of polarized glasses for years and the lenses are nearly clear at this point from sun bleaching I would assume. I wanted to buy a pair of high quality sunglasses for both superior eye protection and superior optical quality. Some research pointed me in the direction of Costa del Mar.

A guy I work with who is an avid sailor knew I wanted some costa's but was a little hesitant to spend the $190 for the pair I wanted. One day he brings in a little black and white catalog from a company called Campmor. Low and behold they somehow have certain models of Costa Del Mar sunglasses for 1/2 off. Oh and they have a web site too

I ordered the Frigate sunglasses with the glass lenses (grey w/blue mirror). $90 instead of $190, unbelievable deal.

I got the glasses the other day and let me tell you they really are fantastic. Unless I am staring directly at the sun my eyes are completely relaxed at all times when I am wearing these. The tint is darker than I am used to (remember my old lenses had become very light with age) but the clarity is outstanding. With my old glasses I would sometimes take them off to get a better look at something, with these it seems like I can see better with them on, even though they are tinted.

I can not speak to the quality of the polarization for fishing as it the middle of February.

I just thought I'd pass along this great deal to all of my friends here at I-boats. Let me know what you guys think.

Ha, ha, I only wish I could buy a pair of sunglasses for $190. The pair I bought last summer ran me $540 after all was said and done. Price of being half blind, I guess.

I've heard real good things about the Costa del Mar. Sounds like you got a heckuva deal.

Good optics aren't cheap but can make an amazing difference. But like bassman said, you start adding prescription lenses and bifocals, it gets spendy real fast.

Wow. Even at half-off I wouldn't/couldn't drop that kind of coin for fishing glasses. I'm just too cheap

But, if your eyes like 'em, that's all that matters.

I have been a walmart guy for sunglasses for a long time. I made a decision that since fishing is my passion in life it's money well spent to have good equipment. Believe me for the amount of use it will get I feel it's a worthwhile investment. I also think that eye/sun protection is a necessity if I want to enjoy my passion for the next 40 years or more.

i won't spend more than 20 bucks on sunglasses. I lose them too much.

What do they put into a pair of $500 sunglasses that justifies the price?
Seriously, There is so much other stuff i need for the boat, i can't waste money on sunglasses.

Ya, me too.

My optometrist belongs to our fishing club. He sells prescription Costas so I asked him if they were any better for your eyes than the next pair. He told me they were good quality sunglasses, but they are no better for your eyes than any other sunglass that is rated for 100% UV-ABC protection. IF you want the best, look for glasses that not only protect for UV- ABC, but HEV as well.

I bought sunglasses that fit over my prescription glasses, they have the wide side arms with the tinted open for side vision and that wide arm blocks the sun so it does not come in from the side. I have some cheap ones for the boat and I bought a pair from BPS that cost me $50 that stay in the vehicle. I bought the BPS set when on a road trip with no sunglasses and the eyes were starting to hurt, saw BPS by the interstate, stopped and got them, would not have paid that much had I been were I could have spent less.

I totally agree. If all I wanted was protection than any polycarbonate lense will give 100% UV-A and B. I bought my wife a pair of hobie sunglasses with my order that are poly lenses and 100% UV A,B,C for $30. They are really nice as well.

I went with the costa's for there superior optical quality as well. I know from a pure economic standpoint these glasses are not the most cost effective. I guess it's like buying a car in a way. All anybody really needs is the base model but we pay extra to have something that gives us a better experience.

Another way to say what I'm saying is .... Read my sig!! It's so true, so often.

Re: Just bought some Costa del Mar sunglasses (killer deal)

i am also in the market for some costas after finding "blisters" on each of my eyes that seem to be from "cheap" sunglasses. i work outside and was told the "blisters" will grow and require surgery if i do not protect my eyes better. $190 is a small price to pay to avoid that.

scipper77 did you get the 400 or 580 lens? i am leaning towards the 580.

I got the 400 lens. Look at the links I posted, there are some with the 580 lens. I'm curious how good the 580 lens really is.. Costa makes it out to be the best thing ever!! but they are just trying to make a sale.

Follow the links I put in my first post and let me know what you think.

I hear you. Mrs Ken has worked for the leading eye doctor and laser eye surgeon in this area for the last 19 years. His advice is "cheap and cheerful" sunglasses are just fine but you must wear them whenever you need to or you will be in to see him years before your time for cataract surgery.
We have pairs of sunglasses everywhere. Cars, boat, cottage, trailer, toolboxes, garage and my desk at work. So far no cataracts !!! :D

one thing that i want to avoid is that sunglasses tan. Where the area right around you eyes is white, but the rest is tan.

I sailed with a guy in australia, who had the worst sunglass tan. I mean it was like dark red on his cheeks, then ghost white around his eyes.

I never got like that thou. but he sailed on a charter boat every day.

Obviously you can still read a newspaper with your bare eyes. Wait a few years.

Thanks for the link J Martin.
Yes I need readers, and that site has some nice looking glasses at a good price.
I am looking for a good fishing line knot that I can tie with my eyes closed. I "hate" fetching reading glasses to tie on lures.

my bother has 2 pairs. 1 with the 400s and 1 with the 580s. the 580 do have a noticeable "hd" like difference. i also agree it seems like you can see everything clearer with either lens.
