I have been reading the post from you guys and see that you have been very helpful and kind!! I just moved beside a lake and love to fish so I bought a 14'Starcraft aluminum v bottom boat and a 25 hp motor, I think evinrude but it has been painted so I'm not completely sure about the manufacturer.

The boat has been completely stripped and I would like to build some platforms to mount some pedestal seats. Need some input here type of materials, building a steering console? Any help on this part of the project would be appreciated or direct me to another source on the net.

The motor... it seems to have good compression. We pulled the spark plugs but could not get any spark. when we removed the covers it was absolutely spotless. Painted inside and out. When we removed the observation plate to get to the points it again was very clean under the fly wheel. No spark so it wouldn't start. The guy I bought it from said it hadn't been started for 2 years. Where do I go from here on the motor? Is a 25 hp too big for this boat?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

if you want to reach me direct mclay@bluebonnet.net

Howdy, MClay. You need to find the CG ratings plate that should be on your boat somewhere. I suspect that your boat is rated for 15HP.

Before we can give you much help on your engine, we need a model number. There should be a small plate riveted to the part that clamps the engine to the transom.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Re: Just bought my first boat and I need help

Thanks for your response I have the model # it is 225 3624. The man who sold this to me said it was an Evinrude but I looked up this number on the web site listed here and could not find it. That is when I began to wonder if it was an Evinrude. On the pate there was some writing that said the BF goodrich Co. I thought that was strange???!!

Like I said early any help is appreciated.

Mitch

Just wanted to throw in my .02 on the HP rating issue. I have a '78 Starcraft 14'. This particular craft is rated for 30 HP. Did you find your plate on your craft?
I installed a floor and console on mine but went thru a bunch of re-working since then or I wud post a pic.

Good Luck
Bill.

Re: Just bought my first boat and I need help

My plate was on the transom (rear where the motor mounts) left hand side. But they vary by model and manufacturer. At any rate this should be readily visible for inspection by Fish and Boat types or Coast Guard Aux. persons. It is where you find your HP rating and load ratings which are both very important. Let me know how you make out.

I can't help out with the motor info...Hope someone jumps in to help you out with that.

Happy Holidays...
Bill.

Re: Just bought my first boat and I need help

12footer I emailed Jeff and he responded right away said it was a motor made for Goodyear by Evinrude in the late 50's.

I am very happy with all the great advice I have been geting here. It is good to know there are still good people on the earth. Thanks to all who have helped me now and I know I will have questions in the future.

As soon as I get the exact year model I will get a manual and try to get this motor running. I'll keep you posted.

Mitch
