I would suggest that you review the requirements to obtain a commercial fishing license in the state of Rhode Island. Here is a link with teh fees and criteria.

Here is an excerpt:

To establish priority status as an active crew member, an applicant for a CFL (commercial fishing license) or PEL (principal effort license) must be able to demonstrate via one or more affidavits signed by one or more licensed captains that he or she fished with that captain, or those captains, at least 75 days during 2009 and 2010. [Note: the 75 days of activity must have spanned both calendar years, meaning that some activity must have occurred in each of the two calendar years. Also, all of the activity must have occurred subsequent to the applicant?s 16th birthday. Also: captains must have held a RI commercial fishing license or landing permit during the relevant period].

Subsequent means AFTER your 16th birthday. Your age disqualifies you from a commercial license. Your inexperience and lack of a sponsoring captain with signed affidavits, also disqualifies you. So, you're not going to get a commerical lobster or Clam license in the state of RI. There are a limited number of licenses issued anyway, so even if you met the criteria, you would not be guaranteed a license will be issued.

You CAN NOT sell your lobster or clams legally without a commercial license. Recreational licenses are for personal consumption only.
When you have obtained a commercial license to fish ANY species in your state or any other state, then come back and discuss your next step, getting a boat and gear ready to fish. Otherwise, you are asking people to assist you engaging in an illegal commercial fishing operation. I doubt anyone wants to be an accessory to illegal behavior.

If you could show me where they list Student Commercial Fishing Licenses, that would be great. To my knowledge a Student License is a discounted Recreational License. This is not the same thing. You cannot sell with a recreational license. It is very possible that I am wrong, and I look forward to being corrected if that is the case.

how do you guys think i could make a pot hauler to haul pots? 4x4 fiber glasses to the boat? with a pulley. i'm seroius i'm getting the part to fix the boat and fixing the motor and outfitting it to work on.

Yes, I think you could make them with 4x4 fiber glasses to the boat -- Yes, with a pulley. You won't know exactly how she'll work 'til you try it out and work out the kinks. You're a hands-on kind of guy, so try that and report back.

If you need more help, just holler. Remember, whatever you make, do it right and protect it so the sun/salt/water doesn't destroy it.

BTW: smallboatlover is not a troll, and it's considered incredibly rude to call anyone a troll on a message board.

smallboatlover posts on other message boards and is quite focused on sailing. He's incredibly capable of taking advice. Sailing seems to help him focus. When it comes to powerboats, he gets distracted and confused. It seems as though he is forcing the powerboat options to make money, when he is much better off talking about sailing, and is more likely to take advice and follow it when it comes to that subject.

not exceed the non-commercial (resident's) daily catch limit and provided that
such shellfish shall not be offered for sale. RIMF REGULATION [Penalty - Part 6.6
(RIGL 20-6-9)]

4.1.1 Commercial Licenses - Fees:
(a) A resident older than nineteen (19) years but younger than sixty-five (65) years
shall pay two hundred dollars ($200) for a commercial license to take shellfish.
(b) A resident twenty-three (23) years or younger shall pay fifty dollars ($50) for a
student commercial license to take shellfish under provision of proof of full-time
student status.

This is a shellfish license, NOT a Lobster license. A lobster might have a 'shell', but that does not make it a shellfish (Technically it makes it a crustacean). Shellfish include, clams, scallops, oysters, conch. If you want to 'clam for cash', you can just as easily do that in mud flats and shallows at low tide.

Perhaps you're right but you can't put a pot hauler made out of 4x4's on a 14' boat. You can't even haul crab pots in a boat that small.

Why I Sail... by smallboatlover:


So this is my reason why I wanna get rid of my motor boat so bad and get a sailboat I can sleep on. If I had a sailboat that I could sleep on, I wouldn't be typing this right now.

But tonight I went for a sail. There was supposed to be a storm coming in, but I saw no sign of it, and I wanted to go for a sail. So, I raised the main with the new haylard and saw it was tangled with the topping lift, but I got the sail up enough so it didn't matter that there was a belly in the sail. But I was used to that, because of the old haylard making a big belly. So, I had the sail raised while messing with one of the ropes that keeps the back hatch on. With the sail raised I wasn't sure if I was going for a sail... but then I said ''scr-w it'' and hooked the dingy up to the mooring and left. Went out a li'l bit, tacked once, then started heading back in. I looked back and realized that I was going down wind into the sunset. And then I realized why life's so good. So then I get back to the mooring -- no problem.

Hooked the sailboat to the mooring, dropped the sail, put everything away, and headed back in before dark.

One nice sail today.

I can't wait til I get a sailboat I can sleep on, because I wouldn't be coming home tonight -- I would be with a buddy sailing to a cove and sleeping on the boat, and in the morning catch the northerly wind and cruise down the bay drinking a cup of coffe and heading to an island, and get to the island at night and anchor up and sleep again, or go to somewhere to have lunch in Bristol. All the things I could do with a boat to sleep on, but for now I will just keep learning on my boat; I will never sell my current sailboat -- my dad won't let me. So, I will just keep learning on it, and maybe teach my friends on it.
