Re: Jonny/Rude Carb Jet Questions

Maybe you have a stuck float, that could cause a carb overflow. Also, check to see if 60 psi is acceptable for this engine.

Sounds like you have a weak coil if its trying to start, unless you needle and seat on the float is worn out or has trash in it, another thing to check is the jets, make sure there isn't a piece of trash stuck in there if so that can give you fits. Just a thought

It ought to run on 60psi, if the gauge is accurate. I've seen them run well on less, and they're just a little hard to start.
What's the state of those ignition coils? Start and then die is exactly what the 3hp I was last working on was doing, it was caused by cracked coils. You should be able to get that engine running without the screen, but partly choked. It's dicey though.

bidlimit - the Johnson's had a silencer as well as the Evinrudes. Have a look at this '61 pamphlet page.

Fixed orficii do enlarge over time. Fuel moving through them at a high velocity erode them.

c/6
Hooty

Paul, I stand corrected. I guess the newer ones had them.

Re: Jonny/Rude Carb Jet Questions

I also have an 81 johnson 2 hp 0ne cylinder job, I took the coils from the 3 hp and tried them in the smaller engine and it ran better then ever with each coil. so I bought a new coil for the 2 hp. The ignition system seems to be OK.
Flooding is my main problem, I have disassembled and cleaned the carb half a dozen times. It still floods if I choke it at all.

Please, Does anyone have a picture of the two Reed valve gaskets?? I had to make them and I may have done it wrong, and also a picture of that darn carb screen??

The factory service manual I got from E Bay said if an O ring was on the crank just above the oil slinger I should remove and discard it, that it was there for shipping purposes only. I installed a new one there before assembly thinking I was doing the right thing. It that a possible problem?????
