I hate a 12ft Jon boat, I just rebuilt the transom, I can sit ontop of it and it wont wiggle or flex at all (150lbs) and I am going to put a 20hp on it (12ft jon) weighs about 100lbs. Any ideas on how I can help support it even more?

Your 12' may not even be rated for a 10hp. Rating is based on transom width, transom height and boat length.

With a 20 the hull will be very unstable at speed, prone to flipping. I know, I did just that years ago with a 20 Johnson. If you insist, look at my photos in the reply to The next post down: New outboard great price----

My 2cts...I'd be looking at wings for that boat...I doubt that boat is rated for more than 10hp....a 20hp is waaaay to much motor.

Assuming a 4.25' wide transom. (Hard chine, flat bottom less than 20" transom)

.5(12x4.25)-15 = 10hp

That probably generous. I have a 12 ft aluminum jon boat which we use with an electric trolling motor in our small lake at the house, it's rated for 5 hp.

Hey, I'm all for going fast and having fun with boats (see my Checkmate 'flying' in my avatar photo) but there's no way in hell I'd put a 20 on a 12 ft. jon.

I have to agree with everybody else. A 10HP will make that hull fly. A 20HP will make it flip and cause some damage... JMHO!

How thick is the transom? Does it have a knee brace? Are the ends of the transom tied in to the sides of the hull?

Despite what you said, I tried it and it worked fine, by no means was I flying but I was doing good. 35mph was what I got. Its not a flimsy boat neither, its weleded, not riveted and is very thick. Its a homemade boat one of my buddys built and I bought it off him. I guess I should have gaven more information, but thanks for the help!

20 HP motor on a 12 foot Jon boat. 35 MPH. Did you hit any waves in that thing? Sounds something my cousin and I tried 35 years ago. Only we put a 75 Merc on a 14' wood fiberglass coated racer that was designed for about 40-50 hp.... It was a friggin blast.....untill we hit a wave and flipped that thing. I still remember the sound of a motor at WOT completely out of the water.

Famous last words: Oh $#!+ !
