Hi I am a complete novice as far as boats are concerned , I've been trying to find out what year my outboard is.i have looked on various sites and I'm finding useful information if I knew the terminology : welsh plug, swivel bracket ,clamp bracket , I know what a core plug is but I for the life of me find the illusive model number . Any help would be great as I have almost done the rest of the boat and it would be boring rowing it ,pictures would be even better

Look on the port stern bracket and you should find a model # there. The core plug is about the size of a quarter and usually on top of the power head.

model identification 2.jpgIt's either a 1978 or a 1979 140 hp Johnson. The model plate will tell you for sure. Though it's old, that engine was very desirable in it's day. If the serial/model plate is missing, look for a casting plug on the top of the block. It may be painted over, but will have vital engine information similar to this picture.

If it is a 115 and has the bubbleback exhaust cover it is newer than 1984

The power pack number won't be much help as that same pack is compatible for many engines (most v4 85-140hp years 1978-1984 and probably a few more). The best and easiest is to find the numbers on the metal plate on the port stern bracket.

The motor does appear to be a late 70's ('78-'79) but it is hard to tell for sure. Unless you know that the cover is original to the motor it won't be much help.

Looks like the motor cover is from a 1978 model. Obviously someone has put a later set of decals on it.

If the motor is a 78 - 79 what are the chances of getting parts and if can get them are that expensive ?

The parts aren't that difficult to get, there were a lot of similar motors with compatible parts (depending on what you need) and you can order most of them online. Figure everything in the marine world is going to cost about four times what you think it should! All in all those are pretty good motors and if you take care of it you can have a reliable machine for years to come! :thumb:

If the engine is pre 1985 it is a 140hp. The 115s before 1985 had flat exhaust covers, not the bubble back which was on the 140. If it is a 115 with a bubble back then it is Post 1984. However it doesn't appear to have the VRO.
