As if I am not doing enough already I want to spray paint my Johnson 90hrs.
For the engine cowl I will probably use the same topside paint that I use on the hull, but for the lower cowl that the powerhead mounts to and the lower unit could I use regular rustoleum, after priming of course.

I would say that it might work, no personal experience however. My only thought would be that the saltwater would take a pretty heavy toll on that brand. How bad are your lower unit's now?
If you want shoot me a pm - I'm in Bonita Springs. Be glad to come by and take a look for ya. Done a bunch of them. But like I said, none with Rustoleum.

I have not had good luck with Rust Oleum on engines. It does not seem to cure to a hard finish and the sun fades it.

I have used the same paint I use on the hull and it works well. The hull paints I prefer are: Pettit and Interlux, one part epoxies.

I've also found that the Tempo rattle cans hold up well.

Of course, the paint job success is in the prep. work.

1. Sand the engine, and hit it with a good degreaser.

2. Hit it again with paint thinner.

3. Then wash it down with a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water.

4. Prime any bare aluminum areas with Tempo Zinc Chromate paint.

5. Paint to your color.
