I have a low hours 1998 Johnson 50 HP in perfect condition except that the remote throttle linkage has a lot of play in it. How do I take the slack out of it ?

Re: Johnson throttle adjustment

You should have a trunnion nut (large black plastic nut with ridges) that attaches to the trunnion block or anchor block. That large plastic nut is designed to turn in and out to give and take slack based on your throttle opening and closing properly. You'd want some one at the throttle while you turn the nut out to take up the slack. You want the motor off and you need to be turning the propeller by hand so you don't mess up the clutch dog's etc. I'm currently doing the same thing on my 99 Johnson 225, so I'm telling you what my OMC shop manual describes as the procedure.

Good Boating.

Re: Johnson throttle adjustment

duke 1 sorry to say your are a 50% wrong. you set the control in neutral, with cables disconnected at motor, manually put motor in neutral, and throttle linkage to where the idle stop screw is touching the stop. now you adjust the trunion nut, to fit the motor, connect the cable, and motor should be in the it's postion, prior to connecting. you adjust the cable to the motor, not the motor to the cable.

you have 10 year old cable slack is a sign, that cable may need to be replaced. or you have a bushing bad in the throttle linkage.

Re: Johnson throttle adjustment

Guys, thanks for that. I have turned the large black trunnion nut both ways to almost the end of the thread but it did not seem to make any difference. Admittedly I did not disconnect the cable from the engine, just left it in place. The cable may well be stretched but as I mentioned since new the mechanism has had no more than 60 hrs use. All help really appreciated.

Thanks again
