1957 Johngon 35hp RDS-20. I am having difficulty getting the shifting levers to travel far enough to fully engage the shift interlock lever for the trottle control. I've tried adjusting the barrel nut on the cable, but I still can't get that last 1/8" or so of movement. Is there a way to tighten up the slop in the the various linkage parts?

Re: Johnson shift linkage adjustment

The RDS-20 is a 1958 model, not 1957. I have one, too, and I love it. There is an adjustment for shift movement on the shift lever.

Disconnect the cable. With the cowling off, look at the inner end of the shaft from the shift lever.

There is an anchor screw there, at the top of a collar around the shift connector. Loosen it.

Seat the lockout pin in the detent for neutral in the shift lock arm.

Move the shift lever until it is vertical, then tighten the anchor screw to lock the position.

Turning the prop clockwise, manually shift into forward and reverse, making sure the pin engages the detent. The shift lever should move about the same distance for both neutral and reverse. You can readjust, using the anchor screw, if needed to achieve this.

Reconnect the cable and check to see that shifting is correct and that the pin engages the appropriate detent in forward, neutral, and reverse.

Be sure to give the shift arm pivot a shot of grease.

I hope that helps. The factory manual gies a good illustration of these steps.

CATranspalnt, you are correct on the year, my typo. I can get it to engage fine by hand, but the remote control cable does not travel quite far enough. I'll recheck the cable gear position at the controller box to make sure I set correctly too. I'll also try your recommendation. Thank you.

Another question: How does air get in to the carburator when the cowling doors are shut? At idle in the tank, my engine slows way down when I close the front door.

I found the air supply problem. Turns out that a spider web and small leaves were partially blocking the air hole on the bottom front of the housing. Clean it out and problem is solved.

I found out that I did not mate the shift rods properly when I had replaced the water pump. I disassembled and reinstalled the lower unit being extra carefull when coupling the upper and lower rods...shift problem solved!
