Johnson shift cable bracket?

Howdy. I have a 1988 Johnson 25 hp motor that I purchased several years ago. I is set up for remote controls and I have everything but the shift connected. The parts diagrams show a fairly large bracket for the cable to go through. That is on the motor but the cables I have have the knurled wheel on the threaded part of the cable and I see no way on the shift side to adjust the cable. On the throttle side there is a sort of twisted bracket the barrel of the knurled wheel twists into and allows for adjusting. The barrel on the wheel is too big to secure in the large bracket and there is no place to mount a bracket like on the throttle side. Any idea of what it is I am missing either physically on the motor or mentally in my thinking.

So, I have the answer and will share for anyone else in this "boat". The barrel section goes into the bracket and into a smaller section away from the motor. Then, a bolt and nut keeps it from sliding out.
