Re: Johnson Seahorse 5.5 or 7.5??

Good news and bad. I ordered an impeller and pulled the lower unit off. The bad news is that when I dropped the oil it was milky and obviously had water. I noticed a nice blue glue for a gasket on the bottom. Does anyone have a lower unit seal and gasket kit part #?

What about the gasket between the powerhead and lower unit and others on down? I should probably replace all the gaskets down to the bottom. There was a lot of oil residue below the power head.

Re: Johnson Seahorse 5.5 or 7.5??

I took the motor out for a quick lap around the boat launch before I pulled the lower. It seemed like it was getting a little warm as some of the water that was hitting the upper of the lower unit almost seemed to be sizzling. I splashed a little water up on the head to see if it was hot and that sizzled too so I shut her down quickly. When I pulled the lower off it had the entire impeller in tact. There is a lot of grease grime around the base of the motor block and between the block and the area where you access the impeller at. Hopefully this will take care of all the issues.

Was replacing the lower unit seals today. While I was removing the seal in the "bearing housing & bearing assembly" p/n 376074 it cracked and bent. I wasn't hitting the seal very hard and obviously this material is soft. Anyone know where I can get one of these?

Yea, those upper bearing housings are pretty fragile. While you have it apart, run some flex housing, like from a lawnmower throttle cable or any comparable type of object down through the water tube. If it goes clearly through to the bottom, you're in good shape. Sometimes, corrosion will block the water passage, in the midsection. You see where the rubber grommet has the little tab, showing through a hole on the side of the midsection. Motors that had a bit of salt water use without proper flushing, will have these issues.

I will run something through there just to be sure. There should not be any salt water use as this thing has lived in the Midwest and specifically South Dakota.

On another note regarding the Model #, I think I figured out what happened when I was cleaning everything up yesterday. There was a lot of residue on the lower unit and as I was cleaning it up in the parts washer I noticed that the transom mount had been welded. I suspect that the transom mount isn't original and hence the incorrect model number.
