Howdy Folks, i'm new to the forum and to owning a boat. I have model RDE 19 Johnson sea horse 35hp. I am having a hard time finding a manual for it and I think I might have a water pump problem. It starts and runs great but I am getting very little water out of the outlet. I didn't run it long as I was afraid i'd ruin the motor. What is the best way to make sure the pump is working? And how long can I safely run it to make sure the thermostat is opening, if it has a stat? Any help or ideas will be greatly appreciated, i'm learning. This is a great forum to learn from!!!

The model number RDE-19 is a 1957 35hp Johnson. It does not have a thermostat.

When running the engine in a large trash can (whatever), have the water level about 3" above the joint where the lower unit bolts up to the long exhaust housing. The water pump sits directly on top of the lower unit and it needs to be in the water to operate.

The water pump kit number is 379774 (single water tube pump).

Ok, no thermostat. I have it in a can of water but the water is not above the lower unit joint. There is an oval plate about 4 in. long with 4 holes in it, I thought that was the inlet for the pump? I will try raising the water level.

Is there a place I can get a manual for this motor? So far I have only found them for 1958's.

Thanks for the help Joe, I appreciate it.

Ok folks, sorry for the question about the manual. Seems if I follow directions and research here I'll find what I am looking for. But, am I better off getting the service manual, or will the owners manual give me everything I need? I won't ask any more stupid ???? after this one. Thanks

A service manual is good to have on hand.... and no question is stupid.

The water level is important as the water pump is not self priming.... it will not draw water up to it from a lower level. A different story when under way as water is forced up the main water intake screen that exists just above the propeller area.
