Re: Johnson sea-horse 3hp (1964) JH-19A

I managed to get the flywheel nut off with the help from a leather dog leash, then popped the flywheel with a screwdriver and hammer.. carfeully ofc.

Not the best looking coils in the world!

I'm actually thinking of buying a few parts for it now.
Carb-kit
Ignition-parts

I would also like new gaskets and some fuel-line in rubber which fit my motor.. Gonna search some more for this.

Yeah, those coils have seen better days. Points/condensers look like they've been replaced, so just clean them good and set them to .020" at the high point on the cam.

+1. Those coils are toast. All original OMC coils fail eventually. Thankfully you can get new one right here at iboats for about $20 each and they'll last forever. A tune up kit with new points and condensers is also only about $20. If you want to go all out, you may as well replace the spark plug wires too. If you do, be sure you use 7mm Copper Core wires and twist them carefully onto the coil posts. Many auto stores and small engine shops will sell it for a couple bucks a foot. This link should help too.

I bought a running motor instead :p, but i'll probably fix this one and sell it later.

Or sell the other one, depending on which of them runs better :p

Ok, I decided to keep working on this, so new coils are ready to be picked up, found a company here in sweden that sold spare parts :)
Then I have to fix the leaking fuel line, do you guys have a part number for maybe a kit? I read somewhere that there's a rubber-hose kit?

The thread where the fuel-line goes in to the carburetor is pretty messed up aswell :/ don't know if it's a good idea to try to fix this, or just hope for the best :)

Hi opius. Glad you decided to stick with it and were able to find some coils. Here's a link to a parts catalog with exploded diagrams for you motor. It may be of some use to you. Once you find the part(s) you need, check ebay, aomci.org, or here in the forums to see can be found and remember that most Evinrude parts from the same model of similart vintage should also be interchangeable. Good luck. Keep us posted.

New coils in place, gonna get a feeler gauge tomorrow and set the points..
While I still have the flywheel off.

Ohh, and I almost forgot to mention, my old coils had earwigs living inside them :p

Hi!
Nice to follow your thread!
Cracked coils are VERY common on old johnnyrudes.

Check that you have a goog strong blue spark on both plugs before you tighten the flywheel nut!

Since you have problem with parts...
I look up the part number in marine engines website and see if I can find any and sometimes it has got a new number. After that I call my local omc dealer to see what he can do for me.. if that fails I see if marine engine can help or others (ebay). But check out whether they ship worldwide. My experiences are that the parts in US cost half of what I pay at my omc BUT shipping from US cost !

Good luck!

Lycka til med motoren Swenson!

Notice you were using nail polish to seal the welsh plug. Don't know anything about it but I'm a bit leery. In lieu of a new welsh plug I'd use something like JB Weld or a high grade epoxy.

I read of several people who did it.
If it doesn't work. I'll order the carb kit.

Ok, Ignition works, when I turn the flywheel there's shiny blue sparks :)

Next and final step, fix the damn fuel line..
