Johnson Props

I recently purchased a 1994 Johnson 2 cylinder (sm. gear)outboard.Since the motor was purchased from a marine dealer, I installed it and headed out for a day on the lake. A minor problem with the idle set, but I thought things were working well until I threw it into a hard reverse and watched the engine slowly rise up. This prompted me to begin to start checking everything. I noticed that the prop installed was an OEM part number 763482-12" X 17 pitch 3-blade. After researching my engine; it had a OEM Part no. (old#:386907) 763488-13" X 11 pitch 3-blade prop installed at the factory, I am questioning the prop that is on it now. If I follow the example that an increase in pitch decreases RPM, I am losing alot of RPM. Should I consider changing this prop back to the factory original? Thanks...Steve

Re: Johnson Props

If you throw it into hard reverse the engine will rise as it is wanting to go back and can't, it compensates by going up. This will happen with just about any prop you have on it as long as it has enough thrust. If it performs well in forward and does what you want it to do (within the rpm range it is supposed to be) there is nothing you can do except not throw it hard into reverse. This in not good on your gearcase anyway.
