my motor is about a 1972 40hp super sea horse. The motor sat for 6 years outside, but just recently i got it all fixed up, i got new points, condensers, coils, plug wires/plugs, and the carburator got cleaned out along with the float adjusted. From what i remember it years ago when it ran it was alot faster than it is now. Anyways, i took it out 4 times since i got it back from being fixed, as i said it didnt seem like it ran as fast as it did 6 yrs ago. I had it out a couple days ago and it was running worse than it has been, the longer i ran it the harder it got to start and when running wide open throttle it would keep on spitting or seemed as if it was missing. Finally the motor died and it wouldnt start again. I got it home and took the plugs out they were pretty dirty and checked the spark and there was spark. I guess i need someone elses opinion here that knows more than me on what i should do to get it started now. And if theres anything i can do to make it faster when i get it going. A guy told me the motor should smoke a bit because its a 2 cycle motor, the motor never smoked when i had it. And how much oil should i mix with 6 gallons of gas? Thank you for your help

Check compression. Check fuel pump. 50:1 gas:eek:il mix. Use TCW-3 oil. Was the impeller changed? Is it pumping water ok?

Re: johnson outboard question

50:1 is one pint (16 oz) of oil to a 6 gallon tank.

Were you using a fresh tank of gas when all of this was happening?

Re: johnson outboard question

You say it doesnt seem as fast as it did before, is it still on the same boat, if not more than likely it will not perform the same.

The motor sat for 6 years outside

If in fact it did sit for 6 years, (inside or out) it may be pumping water from the tell tale, but id be willing to bet it is not pumping very efficiently, i would think the fins are permanently curved and not to mention brittle. and what condition is the thermostat in, is the motor running hot. I think I would change the impeller and thermostat whether you think it needs it or not, it is an inexpensive form of preventative maintenance and it will give a little piece of mind as well as eliminate the cooling system from the troubleshooting process.

yes its on the same boat even the day i got it back from getting fixed it didnt run very fast. It slowly started running worse and having more trouble starting everytime i would take it out. I will look at my manual to see where the impeller and thermostat are. thanks
