Johnson Outboard 9.5 1973 9R73B can hardly pull start with spark plugs in but with plugs removed pulls very easy

After using Deep Creep in spark plug holes seems like there is too much compression to pull cord to start. Just bought this and it started up before purchase and a couple of times when I put boat in the water, but nothing since. I could pull the cord before Deep Creep but not now. Only can pull when plugs are out.
I'm new to outboards but very mechanically inclined. Need some help please.

Perhaps you should remove the Plugs and pull the Starter Cord, rapidly for, say , about 50 pulls. You may have poured enough of the Snake Oil in to cause Hydro-Locking.

the 9.5 is a somewhat low compression engine (See Leroy's)
stop using the pull cord to much because you will strip that plastic gear on the starter $$

never jerk start it always engage the starter gear first and pull normally

find out what is wrong. ...drop the GC and see if things improve.

if not something mecanical "top side" is the issue.

Deep creep should have gone out the exhaust ports long ago.

did you chck GC oil for water intrusion ?

Thanks jimmbo, I am letting it sit a bit longer and pulling the cord without the plugs to spurt out the oil. After do some research it seems like I will get it to work just going to take a bit of time. I am hoping the Deep Creep didn't ruin anything.

Thank you Crosbyman, I have found Leroy's Rambling's pages, great information! I haven't been able to run it since before putting the
Deep Creep in but figured it may help get it started. Now the locking situation is going on. I will drop the GC and check GC oil for water intrusion. Just needed some direction so I wouldn't create more problems

I can't see deep creep locking up things if not the GC.... something serious (internal) may have happenned ???
could the FW be snagging on a coil ?? pull it see if you can turn the crankshaft with just the nut on

Thank you for your reply, I am new to outboards and I am not sure what FW is. Forgive my lack of knowledge

Flywheel.
I doubt that it is snagging on a Coil, as you are able to rotate the Engine with the Plugs out.

No need to drop the Gearcase to check for water, just loosen the Drain Screw, and if water comes out, or the Oil looks like Irish Creme, further testing/inspection required

Okay, I have now started it up after holding my thumb over the spark plug holes which I got a little pop and some smoke. did it to the bottom spark plug got the same result. put plugs back in, set it to the real lean position got it started, lots of smoke, a bit of oil dripping out of the exhaust and it bogged down and stopped. tried again and got it running about 4 more times now trying to get the idle speed up so it won't die. It is taking quite a few pulls to get it going and I'm now giving it a break. There's hope!!!! Thanks to all who have responded.

Was it working well before you fixed it with the deep creek, or maybe another adjustment?

If spurting oil out of the plug hole....then you have a hydro lock...to much oil !! Probably fouled the plugs...keep pulling to clear out the excess crap !! Once it has shot most of it out, put in new plugs, fresh gas/oil mix...not old stuff...new !! See if that gets her goin...My guess is you flooded the cylinders with your mystery oil and fouled everything up !!!

I couldn't get it to start before the deep creep, but did finally get it started up with lots of smoke today and it fired up 3 to 4 more times after. Still having a problem getting it started but I can use the pull cord again not frozen. Think carb clean out with new plugs will help

as per leroy's the carb on these must be real clean.... as you progress to a happy ending... you may want to check timing, electricals etc.... lots of good utubes available for you .
here is one on timing and a note adjuting the cam follower.

the side knob is for adjusting the low idle limit

Deep Creep is a penetrating oil and lubricant. If you use it in an outboard tank, you need to clean out the tank, lines and carb. Penetrating oil frees up debris which finds its way to the carb.

Use only outboard oil with fresh gas in the outboard. TCW-3 or a better rating for outboard oil. A 50:1 ratio of gas to oil is pretty standard, but check to see if the 9.5 takes something different.

50:1 became the norm in 1964, the first yr of the 9.5
, his is a 73, the last yr for the 9.5

Crosbyman, Thank you, I have been knee deep in You Tube videos and feel pretty confident I will get this running well. I just do not want to be out on the lake and I can't get it started. My lake ( Lake Isabella) in Ca. gets windy without notice. Alot of my friends think I'm crazy as I just turned 70 and female. But I am a firm believer in asking for help.

9.5hp are fine motors. like most oldies ..fixing them is a great hobby and you can tell your friends you got yourself a good motor for less than the taxes they paid on their fancy ones that won't last as long. mine is a 1966 version

Right? I will pass that on! I do enjoy learning how to make things work again. If I get in too deep I take a step back and do more investigation and consult experts! Thanks for the support!
