Hello Bartender.....welcome to the one stop help center....iboats.

Indeed the engine is a 72'.

When your goin' at WOT and it comes outta gear, does it feel like ya' hit a log??

If so, probably the lobes on the clutch dog and forward gear have rounded off over many years of use and SLOW shifting. Slow shifting is not good. Ya' want to get it in gear. Pop it in.

Just to make a little test, disconnect the shift cable at the engine and shift into forward and go to wide open throttle. If it doesn't kicks out, you have an adjustment problem with the shift cable. If it's still kicking outta gear, probably worn lobes.

Also, check the lower unit lube and look for sparklers of metal or in some cases shards of metal.

You described the classic symptoms of worn lobes. But check it out like I described first before we start thinking clutch dog and gears.....this gets expensive.

Thanks for posting....

Yes, Bartender. That is a 1972 50hp.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Get yourself a Service Manual. Check the adjustment of the shifter. It may not be seating the clutch dog all the way.

It is also possible that the dog or gear is worn out.

Aftermarket manuals here: http://www.boatmotors.com/manuals.html

OEM Manuals (the best) here: www.kencook.com

Good luck. :)
