Crud!! No type "C" oil there. Ack!

Order over internet. I think iboats right here may have. Certainly any BRP Evinrude dealer will have Premium Blend. Just make sure to get the correct oil.

So, I imagine that when draining the oil from the gearbox, it is not supposed to come out looking like milk? God, love my old man. he couldn't maintain his stuff for @#$!.

I also found some OMC approved oil. They had it in a box at the very bottom of the shelf. Who ever thinks to look at the bottom? *rolls eyes*

How can I flush the gear box to make sure all of the crappy oil is out?

Fill it full of ATF, run it on a hose, shift through the gears several times. Pull the drain plugs and let it set and drain, then refill with the proper oil.

Shifter 1-boat.jpgshifter 2-boat.jpg

OK, so here is the shifter, taken apart. What do I need to inspect or bypass for the reverse to work?

I am getting a reading of 12v on the green, but that's it. when I engage it just goes into fwd.

Trying to get the boys out tomorrow if possible, no wind in the forecast. Thanks for the help.

Can somebody please PM me a diagram of what I would need for a switch? I can get a push/pull switch at the hardware store easy. What else do I need?

You see that dohickey (technical jargen) in the front portion of the box on the bottom, with the 2 screws and a lever with a little roller on it, That is the shift switch. Take some WD-40 and and try to force it into the switch and work it by hand several (lots) of times back and forth. If the voltage problem is caused by crud in the switch that might flush it out. Then recheck your voltage readings.

So, cleaned and switch moves freely. Voltage reads about 10-12 on either wire when toggling. The wires are green, purple and white. The motor will not shift. What else can I do? I'm at a loss and about ready to scrap the entire thing.

I just reread all the posts and did not see where you tested the voltage at the connectors on the engine, did they check out ok, did you try jumping the wires going down into the lower unit?

I have to build a jumper wire to do that. Prolly tomorrow. What is the best way to do this? I don't need to be trashing anything.

First you need to put your control box back togeather.
Here is how to check it, you will need a test light or a volt meter.
Find the blue and green wires that go down into the lower unit, starboard side towards the rear of the lower cowel.
Disconnect both wires, 1 blue and 1 green, connectors are knife terminals covered by a rubber slip boot.
Check the voltage on the wires coming FROM the control box, with key on.
Neutral=voltage on green wire only
Reverse= voltage on both blue and green wire
Forward= NO voltage on either wire
If you have correct voltages from the control box, the problem is in the lower unit.
If the voltages are not correct from the box, you can still check out the lower unit for proper operation.
Use a jumper wire from the battery side of the starter solenoid (+ voltage). With the engine running on a hose and prop removed for saftey.
With no voltage to either wire the prop shaft should be in forward.
With voltage applied to the green wire you should get neutral.
With voltage applied to both wires at the same time you should get reverse.
The lower unit oil has to be clean and the proper type (C).
Let us know how the tests come out.
