johnson 48hp 1996 dropped lower unit to replace water pump. After a ***** getting the shifter rod undone replace pump ok. but in the process I screwed up the lower shifting rod connection to the propeller shaft. Am I out of my element? should I take it to a professional to get it reconnected? Any advice would be appreciated>>

Go to shop.evinrude.com and look at the parts diagrams. Maybe you'll get some ideas.

Thanks but I have done that and I think I need to take it to a dealer. I dont' see how they can make the connection in that tight of quarters. Thanks again

Sometimes its a matter of removing some componentry to gain access.....

What type of top connection does the shiftrod have?

If you haven't got the right tools to work on it, it may sometimes be best to take it to a dlr. If you don't have a lot of 1/4 " drive tools and flex sockets , it can be a real bear.

Thanks guys I have taken it to a dealer. word to the wise... They told me never remove a phillips screw in the housing it is what keeps the lever in tack with the gears.. Thanks again
