900 is too high, but not all of your problem. You can take the housing with the shift shaft o-ring/seal off look down inside the case. May see something. I think you may have a bent worn clutch dog pin and /or bent worn bell crank. Prop shaft will have to come out to get at these parts. May be a problem with the shifting shaft on the powerhead under the carbs.

Thanks. I have adjusted the idle to 600-650 rpm. I have adjusted the linkage screw on starboard and she is going into gear great now. The problem is I am a dumb ***. Alzheimer's and motors do not mix. While adjusting the idle, after all was fixed, I did not turn on the water to the motor. I caught it quick. But, not quick enough to burn out the new impeller. Time to start over.

While I think dumb is a little harsh, I would agree that boaters and mechanics are OUT THERE sometimes.
