I have just brought a boat with this engine J140 TLC TE and it went well for two trips (half hour each trip), then the third trip it stopped while cruizing at around three quarter speed after around twenty minutes ... it cranked but wouldnt start. I auxillaried home and tried to start it whilst getting the boat on the trailer. It started on slow idle but would not run when put into gear for more than a few seconds any ideas people ...thanx in advance

sounds to me like a fuel issue, pull the hose from the fuel pump going to the carburetor.. crank engine for 3-5 seconds did fuel squirt out of the end of the hose?? make very sure your gas is good, clean, high quality gas mix 50 -1. if this all checks out your problem should be at least clearer to diagnose. good luck keep us posted.

Welcome to iboats.
Basic health check compression, spark, fuel delivery and spark plug condition. Check the "Top Secret Files" at the top of page #1 of this section for further information on doing this. Post back your results and you should get all the help you need from there.
Good Luck.

Thankyou both...... have found a bit of a perished hose pipe on the supply side of the fuel pump to the carby, also with a cable tie instead of a clamp .......hose does not have right angle in it and is bent therefore restricting flow and maybe reducing power at top end...starts fine out of water so will put it in the lake tonight and run it to see .....needs new pipe and clamping system all round .....filter looks OK and no water in filter bulb ....Boat hasnt had much TLC before me so am starting to give the old dear a clean up ...will let you guys know how things go.
Dont know how to post so both you helpful guys get this so please take this as a personal thanx to you both

You must assume that the carbs need stripping cleaning and reassembling with new kits. If you dont do this you stand to burn up the motor. Also the impeller and lower unit oil will need replacing. If the impeller fails you again will burn up the motor. Just had a guy who recently bought a boat with a V6 GT and ignored this advice. He came to me almost in tears. All six cylinders gone. Cheaper to find another motor.

Hi and thankyou for your post, Are you assuming the cooling impellor failed or is stopping intermitently, and as such overheats the engine into stopping ? look forward to your reply

An overheat can be caused by a number of problems - old/broken impeller, blown head gasket, lean fuel, clogged thermostats, old rubber deflectors in the block, plastic around the intake and of course the idiot who runs his engine out of the water. Take your pick -

Hi Solittle
Your post comes from the assumption that the engine stopped due to an overheat.
As i wrote in my first post , the engine simply cut out. Most probably due to a fuel issue, as suggested.
I am at present running thru fuel lines , flushing fuel tank, replacing and cleaning filters, and any perished hose lines.
I have just purchased this boat/engine combo, and believe the engine has not had a decent service by the previous owner for a very long time , so have an enjoyable job on my hands to restore it to its past glories.
Thankyou for your suggestions and look forward to hearing from you and others during my progress
................Thanx for taking the time to share your knowledge , much appreciated
With regards
