My 9.5 Johnson leaks gear oil through the exhaust while stored lying on its back with the prop & cowling housing facing down. The lube is not coming from the prop shaft seal and it only leaks if the engine is positioned as described above. It was stored in that position approx 1.5 yrs before the leak started. Have replaced the lube but it leaks back out again. I want to start using this engine again but don't want to put it in the water till I repair the leak. Any suggestions? 9R-69S

Hello.
If I am not mistaken ,there is an o-ring on the shaft that goes down to the clutch dog and changes the gears in the lower unit.
The o-ring sits exactly where this shaft enters the sealed off area of the lower unit.
Just double check before you do anything with this piece of info.
good luck.

get the gear case resealed and you will not have aproblem it is cheaper then blowing your gear case
because you ran out of oil150 bux is cheaper than 8or900 bux

Mine does the same thing, but to me it looks like residual oil from the exhaust. I will pull the plug and see if the gearcase is low or has water.

Re: Johnson gear oil leak through exhaust

Many thanks to all who have responded to this post. I have just been out in my garage & have set an old Johnson QD-19 I bought at a pawn shop 10 years ago & have never used (due to lack of a pressurized gas tank/fuel line) on my project Lone Star 14 footer & it sure looks mighty fine sitting there. I had hoped to restore this old aluminum boat, but change its paint scheme to something in the red\whire\blue classic color range. Since the old qd-19 still is in Johnson 'brown' colors I amy have to rethink my paint scheme plans.

I am thinking now I will try to find what I need to get this old girl back in the water while I work on the 9R69s. Any/all help/tips/comments much appreciated.

I put all new seals everywhere on the lower unit of my QD20 and it STILL leaked diff fluid. Get the oil glow stuff from the auto parts store and a "black light" bulb (about $4) and you will be able to tell where the leak is. Mine was right in the front of the torpedo section which had a hairline crack, probably from hitting a rock. Some metal repair epoxy fixed it.

Re: Johnson gear oil leak through exhaust

With 'sweet' talk and some TLC I got the lower unit off my 9.5 tonight. The leak is definately from the seal directly below the impeller (water pump) housing & I have new seal/impeller kit ordered. Does it make a significant difference if the tapered & splined drive shaft separates from the lower unit as opposed to the powerhead? Mine came off @ the lower unit but I can't see why that would make a differnece when replacing the seals. Any enlightenment? Thanks
